I would like to stay at the Sheraton Royal Gardens. I see it is about 30km from the airport. Any ideas on how much a taxi might cost to get there. Or would it be better to stay in the city or closer to the airport? We are there for 2 nights with the one full day to see the pyramids and maybe the museum.

I paid about 50EGP from the airport to Sheraton Cairo. It appears that taxis are no longer allowed to stop outside the airport, so you will need to cross the street and go down the elevator on the other side to access cabs. I was approached by a tour agent. Knowing that if I will be fleeced if I had told him where I am staying, I enquired the cost to Cairo Museum, which is only a short 5 mins drive away from Cairo Sheraton H&T.

Sheraton Cairo - a bad experience

I just endured one night in the most tawdry hotel i have ever visited.. (yes even worse than the Sheraton Langkawi)...the Sheraton Cairo.

I was very tired from overnight flight and full day in office, so just resigned to it. My colleague who is staying a week, is now transferred to the Semiramis Intercon. OK step by step:

Arrival - greeted by a gang of burly porters chasing for tips, no thanks i can carry my bag myself. Side stepped the useless metal detector on the door and made my way up to check in. Nice welcome to the hotel.

Staff at checkin need some SPG training. Platinum guest ? Amenity ? Clearly two phrases unheard of. Even at check out they were confused on Amenity. I just wanted some more 'local gift' as a joke.. so told them to go read a manual instead.

I feel into bed directly, and only this morning woke up in a grotty smelling excuse of a room. The furniture was water stained. The curtains, pillow, soggy mattress and carpet were ingrained with cigarette smells.

The shower was an excuse of a dripping tap of lukewarm water. The towels all had a musty odour and had long since lost any softness.

Woodwork (eg door frames, wardrobe etc) was greasy.

A deep clean or total renovation is needed. This place is devaluing the Sheraton brand.

It was a corner room with tatty concrete balcony, with nice view of traffic.

So, if you are here for a holiday, take the safer option and go to Royal Gardens or Mena House, don't gamble your precious holiday in such a patchy hotel like the Sheraton Cairo.

At check out I suggested they get a deep clean done, and was told to write in about it, she handed me a pen and paper, on which i wrote in capital letters ' ROOM 1075 - CLEAN IT - SMELLY & DIRTY' and then went to hand into the duty manager.

Thing is, I won't be going back to check if it has been resolved or not.

Instead of posting a new thread, I thought I'd ask my question here:

I will arrive on LH around 19:00 early September and fly out the next day on EK around 19:00. I have seen the pyramids and wouldn't want to experience the hassles again, but very much enjoy the old city. Where would you recommend I stay, considering I have such limited time? (It's just me - no family/kids).

As for transportation to/from the city, did someone mention it's about 50EGP? Where at the airport do you find the taxis? Last time I was picked up and I remember a large parking place where I exited, but not any taxis.

The Sheraton Royal Gardens is a very old hotel. It was built around 1920 and doesn't appear to have been remodeled since. It has several very good resteraunts there. The downside to the hotel is it's location. It is miles from anything and with crawling traffic it is tough to get out.

The Sheraton Heliopolis Hotel, Towers & Casino is a nice hotel and is very close to the airport but far from everything else.

I have not stayed at the Sheraton Cairo Hotel, Towers and Casino but the upside is it is within walking distance of the museum.

Yeap! No longer a Sheraton but still shows as a Sheraton on most maps. Must have been a recent conversion.

Question Sheraton Cairo Hotel, Towers and Casino

Has anyone stayed there recently? I have booked a week in mid-September and was wondering what to expect. What is the service like, any chances for upgrading?
I have seen recently few reports about attacks on foreign tourists, any concerns about safety in Cairo?
Any information, thoughts observations will be appreciated
thanks drumbo

I stayed at the Heliopolis last year for a week - it's quite fine and I can recommend it. Sheraton has an office in the airport and they arranged transport for us so I would recommend you check them out before haggling with a taxi driver.

Hello. We stayed at the Heliopolis last Feb and we were upgraded to a nice 2 room suite etc. Great service and used spg. Low amount of points needed. Only about 7 minutes away from airport in free shuttle.

Which Starwood in Cairo Egypt [Master thread]

Next week i am thinking of going to Cairo for a few days and i am having trouble deciding which hotel to go for. After having seen pictures of the hotels none of the hotels seem to be that special.

Have any of you stayed at any of the hotels in Cairo and what are your opinions of them?

I stayed in le meridians pyramid. It was certainly a decent hotel. in a delux room, equal to probably a 4* us hotel. Is way out of town, hotel restaurants filled up at night. cannot see pyramids from rooms. rooms are size of us hotels, not european.

stayed in the le meridians luxor also. again equal to 4*. had very nice room with view of nile.
