Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel, Japan [Master Thread]

Located closer to Kansai International Airport, on the opposite side of the JR Osaka Loop Line from Osaka Station.

I guess they are looking to appeal to the luxury traveler flying into Osaka that doesn't want to spend an extra 15 minutes traveling to the Ritz-Carlton?

Hey, so this hotel just opened and I'm here now. It's excellent -- in the way that Asian Courtyards have nothing to do with their North American cousins, this Marriott has little in common with a North American Marriott.

Entrance to the hotel is a little confusing. There are dedicated hotel elevators from the street and B1/B2 levels, but they're small and can get crowded. However, there are nice gigantic elevators next to them that don't stop at the street level but do go from B1 (which connects to the various train stations) to 19, the hotel lobby. There are also a selection of restaurants on 19.

As a plat, I was given a room on what I think is one of the club floors. This building is currently the tallest in Japan, and the room is on 55 (the top floor of guest rooms of the hotel, which actually starts on 38), meaning I'm in the highest hotel room in the country! (Well, relative to the ground floor of the building -- not relative to sea level.) Based on this floor, rooms xx0x face north towards downtown and rooms xx1x (except maybe xx10? -- there is a suite where that room would be) face south towards KIX and Osaka Bay.

The room is gorgeous, though the layout is a bit odd. When you enter, you face a wall, in front of which is a set of drawers and the info packets you normally find near a desk. Next to you is the toilet (top of the line Washlet). Walk around the wall and you find the bed(s) and TV. There are floor to ceiling glass windows with incredible views. On the far side of the room is a table (not a desk), the mini-bar/tea/coffee area, and the closet. Next to that (against the wall that would be the hallway outside) is the bathroom, which is actually two rooms. The outer room is a sink area and the inner room has a soaking tub and Japanese style shower area (complete with a stool), though the spray can be lifted and act as a standing shower.

The lounge is actually on 38, along with the gym and some guest rooms. It is a huge space, with a portion having a three story high ceiling (though the lounge itself is only one floor) and several trees. Strangely, there is basically no view. The windows look over a patio, which has high fences that mostly prevent seeing anything. The patio itself (the roof of the office building section) seems decorative, not functional.

Continental breakfast is 6-7, then full breakfast 7-10:30. Full breakfast is the usual array of western and Japanese choices, including omelettes made to order. Evening snacks are from 5:30-7:30, and include a fairly wide assortment of hot and cold options. The food has been the same each day -- no rotation. Open bar is from 5:30-9:30, and no children are permitted in the lounge after 7:30. From 10:30-5 and 9:30-midnight is "tea time". One of the tea options is "Cylon" :)

The gym has the usual array of stuff, and is nice by Asian standards, though just average by American standards.

The staff are fantastic, though it's clear they're still learning. I had a couple of minor hiccups on check-in. The welcome gift is points or (a drink AND a snack), but I only picked a snack. The staff somehow found me in the lounge and corrected that. Also a minor clerical error related to using points for one night, but not a big deal.

As for location, while Tennoji isn't itself particularly a destination for most people, there are sufficient restaurants and shopping options in the area. Tennoji is a major transit hub, and you can get almost anywhere with no or minimal transfers, including downtown, KIX, Shin-Osaka, and Kyoto. (The mostly half-hourly Haruka service is a great option that Hyperdia doesn't give up easily.)

The tallest building part is definitely a selling point -- the hotel looks pretty full this weekend, and there are all sorts of people coming up to the lobby and trying to sneak up to the guest room floors (key card required) to check it out.

In summary, I'd stay here again without hesitation. Well, unless demand is so great that the rate doubles or something.

Very nice.

We have a contact at this property and I had been thinking about booking it for later this year. So headed over and given exceptional tour by another member of the reservations staff. As stated above this is nothing like a Marriott in the Americas. The rooms are of a JW quality and very much like a Conrad. I thought the common area was just ok being made of many hard surfaces which makes noise travel. The lobby level has check-in, concierge, pastry shop, bar, afternoon tea area and entry to one of the restaurants. That makes for lots of people and lots of noise. The buffet restaurant on 19 looked "fun" for lack of a better word. Also smelled good. The rotating gelato serving tubs were interesting. Operated by foot peddle.

We saw three types of rooms- superior, deluxe and corner. The superior is described above as the toilet room is in no way connected to the bathroom. The toilet room does have a small corner sink for washing your hands. Of the three we liked the corner the best. It looked very, very comfortable and spacious. The deluxe had the lav in the bathroom. The floor layout seems inefficient but the center core has all the workings/guts for Japan's tallest building.

The Club lounge was huge with hours running as late as midnight. Lack of view has to make you think how they messed that up. The spread look extensive and easily rivals the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong. They have strict rules for children under 12 after a certain time in the evening.

The rooms are equivalent to the Ritz and Conrad in Tokyo in quality. Thoughtful electrical sockets and safe with power plug. There is a frig. The Marriott should upgrade their bathroom amenities to reflect a higher standard. Even the Sheraton Miyako Osaka on Executive floors has Acca Kappa. The rooms we saw may have been on a regular floor.

We look forward to staying shortly and for what we saw will not be disappointed. As stated the location is a pretty good hub for the area. If you have a Japan rail pass ideal since you can take the Haruka to/from KIX. The rates I found were very competitive and easily something expected you would find in a major US city. They do have rates for AAA. We will be staying on property in a couple months and will update. Cheers!

Thanks for the update! Look forward to a further one after your stay.

Cheers.

The present composition of guests is almost all Japanese nationals. There are also nationals from Asian countries but weak from Americas and Europe. The Hotel wants to improve upon the later.

The Hotel is connected to the Kintetsu department store with four floors of dining options. That's the most I've ever seen at any location. The place was so crowded for a Thursday we decided to dine elsewhere. I would like to try the buffet on 19 at the Marriott. That gelato serving machine is cool spinning around with 12 plus flavors. It is attended so you can't go too crazy!

I'd be pretty content if they just used the original Thai Thann products instead of the Chinese reproductions. That would be on par with a few independent high end properties of stayed at.

It's definitely crowded at peak times! I made the mistake of trying to take the elevator up to the dining floors... took several minutes.

Kind of dumb on my part for attempting this, but since it worked last year in Tokyo I'll ask, does anybody have an email address to contact this hotel directly? Looking for availability on 12/31 ( I know, I know..). Can't hurt to ask!

I had a one night stay at this hotel last October. The Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel just recently opened in April 2014. It occupies 38th to 57th floors of Abeno Harukas, which is currently the highest building in Japan. The lobby is located on the 19th floor. Check-in was quick and shortly after I got the keys for my room. I booked the lowest room category (Guest room, 1 Queen) and got a room on the 53rd floor. I'm only a silver member with Marriott so can't say anything about status perks, the only thing I got was free Wifi and a room on one of the top floors (these rooms are called high floor guestrooms on the Marriott website and cost roughly 4000 Yen more than other guest rooms, however the room itself was the same).

I was accompanied by a staff member to my room. The room had a decent size for japanese standards. To the right of the entrance was the supermodern toilet with one of those seats that goes up as soon as you enter the room! The bathroom was on the smaller side, it housed a bathtub and shower in the same enclosure.

To the left of the bathroom by the window was a workdesk and the minibar. The minibar was well equipped and I always like to have a nespresso machine in the room.

Well, beside the comfortable bed, the best part of the room was definitively the spectacular view over Osaka. There aren't that many highrise buildings in that area so there is a unrestricted view over the city!! I could have stayed by the window the whole night to watch the city lights.

There is a fairly nice gym on the 38th floor. It's open 24 hours and it was totally empty during my visit.

http://enewp.ch/wp-content/uploads/2...501_resize.jpg

My rate included breakfast which was served in the restaurant on the 19th floor. The breakfast buffet was the only part of the hotel where I was a bit disappointed. There was a fairly wide spread of japanese breakfast options but western options were a bit limited. But after all that hotel is in Japan so not a big thing ;)

Overall I have to say that I really liked this hotel. It's easily one of the nicest Marriott hotels I stayed so far.

Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel full all weekend Nov 2015?

Hi everyone, I am trying book a Osaka Marriott Miyako hotel room during the coming Nov 2015. but all weekends are gone during the month, does any know why the hotel are so full all weekends?

catcathk Feb 22, 2015 12:03 am

Ok, what I meant are all Saturdays... So far in the futures and all Saturdays in Nov are gone.... Is there some sorta big event going on in Nov? I don't understand...

aaupgrade Feb 22, 2015 5:22 am

It looks like they have a minimum stay requirement (and more). You can book Friday-Sunday, two night stay, but you can't book Saturday-Monday or Saturday-Tuesday. I checked two weekends in November and didn't check any other day combinations like Sat-Wed, Sat-Thu, Thu-Sun, or Thu-Mon. I'll let you investigate further based on your personal requirements.

catcathk Feb 22, 2015 10:44 am

Thank you aaupgrade for the info. I am looking at 21st to 25th, which is Sat to Wed, guess I need to adjust my trip for the hotel requirement... Or do you think I will have luck contacting Marriott to get my desired date??

aaupgrade Feb 22, 2015 1:37 pm

It doesn't hurt to call reservations, or even the hotel directly for that matter.

Thank you, I will try calling tomorrow. Just wonder why Nov? I checked Oct and Dec, nothing like Nov, able to check in on Saturday....

writerguyfl Feb 23, 2015 4:47 am

There are two basic types of stay controls used in hotel revenue management. The one most people know is the Minimum Stay requirement. If you want to stay on a night with a Minimum Stay, you have to meet or exceed the total number of nights. But, you can arrive on any day.

The lesser known stay control is a No Arrivals restriction. With that one, if your check-in date is restricted, it doesn't matter if you want to stay 2 nights or 10 nights. Typically, they are used block people from booking a multi-night stay to get around a Minimum Stay requirement and then changing the reservation to a single night. A good example would be most Saturday nights in Las Vegas.

Rate and stay controls are done at the hotel level. No one at Marriott Central Reservations has the power to override these restrictions. Pretty much your only option would be talking to someone at the hotel.
