You have to take all comments in constructively, but there is a pretty good forum on tripadvisor, and also some recent reviews of this property.

I’m in complete agreement with frankhi. There really is no reason to pay for Club 91. All of the food and beverages have to be consumed in the lounge and who wants to be trapped in a hotel lounge, especially in Cancun, several times a day.

If I was paying the extra cash or even using points for Club 91 I’d feel pretty compelled to try and get value out of it, and that would be tough since I like to leave the property and go on excursions to different places like Cozumel and Isla Mujeres for snorkeling and other fun things. So I’d miss many of the food presentations and end up paying for meals elsewhere anyway.

Unless you’re someone that never leaves a resort once they get there, I think Club 91 is a real waste of cash/points.

I am guessing that the answer is 'no', but do they ever upgrade Plats to the Club level? Or is there a lounge/breakfast option for Plats that is separate from Club 91?

I just booked two award rooms there for December for a week. We booked the base level, not paying anything for upgrades. The two upgrade options are 1 certificate per room per night for a better view and 5(!!) certificates per room per night (if I'm reading that correctly) for Club 91.

Is the 1-cert upgrade worth it? The consensus here is that the Club 91 paid upgrade isn't. We will have 3 adults 2 kids and we aren't big hard liquor drinkers. We tend to grab a 12-pack of beer and a couple bottles of wine and throw it on ice in the room.

How far superior is Club 91 to the Starwood "Royal Beach Club" lounges found at a couple of their Mexican properties? Access to those is $40 or 1500 Starpoints per room per night and really *is* worth it - free liquor, breakfast, and heavy appetizers. (Sometimes they upgrade Golds/Plats for free, but we've gone ahead and confirmed it ahead of time to get adjoining rooms on the RBC level.)

It sounds good if you want to stay at the resort for food the whole trip, or most of it. But in Cancun I like to go out to the restaurants and try things... plus most places are fairly inexpensive for food compared to that club upcharge.

I agree with the above posts. Do Club 91 only if you want VIP on-site treatment and have little desire to go off site. Mrs. HawkSE and I stayed there a few years ago and other than an escorted trip to a ruin site (and a Hurricane) we never really left the JW, Marriott and Ritz area. Club 91 was good for us, but not suit everyone. And as a PLT was told an upgrade to the club level was only going to happen with points or $s. And as you can see from the menu, its not a CL.

club 91

We booked a suite last winter over Christmas for our family of 4 at the JW. A month before we received an email confirmation from Marriott Reservations that we were upgraded to the Club 91 floor, and the amenities listed were those of the club. When we arrived, we did have a suite on the 14th floor, magnificant views, but was told the club was extra. At $140/day, kids extra it didnt seem worth it. We were able to negotiate the rate down to $80 and did the club for 6 days. It was a nice amenity. We got coffee and breakfast in the morning, we would go up for lunch while the kids ate at the beach grill, and would have a drink before going out for dinner. The dinner appetizers they had were excellent. The staff is very protective of their lounge and did not allow our kids (over 12) in, although under 12 is included in the rate. They did not allow food to leave the lounge, although most people took some water bottles or fruit without being questioned. The convenience and feeling pampered was worth it especially since we were on the lounge floor. So if you add up breakfast, lunch and drinks it is probably worth it. If you leave the hotel during the day, it probably isnt. One thing about the hotel was that the pool chairs were all claimed by 7:30 am. it was the busy season, but we noticed that people would pay the pool attendants to reserve a chair for them

As a Plat, I stayed there in late April and received no noticeable upgrade. Although the front desk told us we were being upgraded, we were given a regular room, not waterfront, overlooking pool and the ocean, pretty much like every other room at this hotel (nice, but I failed to see the 'upgrade').

Nothing provided for Plat status other than 2 free coffees in the am from the gift shop (and the clerk there had NO idea what we were talking about; we ultimately had to have them take the charges off the room bill at the end of the stay. BTW, the CasaMagna also offered free coffee to Plats when we stayed there a few years ago).

I too inquired about Club 91 before I left and received an email telling me that as a Plat I was entitled to Club 91 for the 'discounted' price of $140/nt + $50/nt per child. That's not a discount. That's the price for everyone. Why do they try and make it look like they are giving you something when they clearly are not?

Hotel was great, however. Just don't expect much extra as a Plat. They cater to MANY groups and I felt that those organizers probably were getting the room upgrades.

NorthernMiles, I hope you got my PM from a week or so ago.

By the way, the CasaMagna treated us great as Plats a few years ago. they returned my upgrade certs, stating that the upgrade was free due to status (nice touch; no one has EVER refused u/g certs before). If using points, I'd recommend the JW as the point difference is minimal, but if paying for the rooms, the CasaMagna is often close to HALF the cost of the JW and the difference in service may not justify that expense to some.

Yes. I stayed here in April and was very pleased. I am Plat but did not use Club 91. If you do a search here under JW Cancun you will find lots of recent information about both the hotel and the Club 91 offerings.

Have a great trip. It's a beautiful resort.

marriott cancun

i stayed there last year and indeed it s a great property however the beach has been destroyed by the hurricane

i was a godl member last year and did not get any upgrade - got a simple room and the reception was extremely tough and did not want to make any concessions

they said that I got the best room they could get me and the hotel was fully booked

if i were you i would call them and ask what they would offer a platinum member

Comparing Cancun Marriott hotel help

Can anyone compare the two Cancun hotels, CasaMagna Marriott Cancun Resort vs. the JW Marriott? I believe I saw they were side by side. I was hoping to get away with staying at the CasaMagna due to it being a cat 5 and I am light on points at this point. Will have to buy some to even get me through a 6 night stay.

Another question if I could in this post. Concerning buying points, it looks as if they are $125/10,000 points. Any tips on purchasing points? I know you are limited to 50K per year. Am I best to just purchase them with my Marriott premier CC?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone might be able to offer.

I've stayed at both and posted on both; do a search here for Cancun and you'll find lots of info. I loved both hotels.

If you are short on points, stay at the CasaMagna. The biggest difference I find is the pool. The JW pool is better. Other than that, you won't notice much of a difference.

If you can swing the extra points it might be worth it as I believe the point difference between the two is minimal, especially on a 6 night stay. Look to see if they offer any "point saver" dates. You might also look into paying for one night and using points for the rest. (Occasionally the CasaMagna goes for under $200/nt.)

Both hotels are connected by a shared walkway and you can move freely between them. The restaurants at both are very good. The beach is minimal but better at the JW.

Hope that helps.
