We are owners of a timeshare at this resort (bought resale). As others have mentioned, this is probably the most central location for touring the island. Due to its close proximity to the airport (free shuttle takes 5 minutes to get to the hotel),we usually refrain from renting a car until the day after we arrive and return the car a day early. By taking the shuttle at the beginning and end of our trip,we find the process of getting and returning the car much more relaxing without worrying about our luggage.
You may also find a number of discounted or free tours being offered to you. These are usually tied to a timeshare presentation. While you can save money attending these sale presentations, be aware that it will cost you a few hours of your time. If you do attend, a quick way to counter the hard sell techniques
is to let the salesperson know that you are aware that you can purchase the
timeshares much cheaper on the resale market (Check ebay).
If this is your first trip to Kauai, I would be sure to take a helicopter tour and
a Napali Coast tour.
