Only options are to close account and loose the credit history, or continue paying the AF and hope in the future they release a no-fee spg product.

Fast forward to retention and was offered $100 credit after $2,500.00 spend in 90 days, or 30,000 Starpoints after $3,000.00 spend in 90 days. Called back to confirm with a regular agent and another retention representative that it was Starpoints that will convert in to 90,000 marriott points and each confirmed the wording I accepted. Great deal if it goes through as such. We shall see!

I put $30k - $50K spend each year on this card but really want to PC to a no-fee once the option exists again. For now this offer is fine combined with a night free. Hope that helps.
Not going to be 30k starpoints.

Called and was offered $75 credit or 20,000 points for $2,000 in spend in 3 months. Took the 20,000 points and will not be using this card for everyday spend as I have at various times in the past. It will mostly become a sock-drawer card and I'll see if I can get value out of it on the annual free night.

Since Amex does not offer an SPG credit card without AF, you can't PC to a product without annual fee.
Thanks!

Folks that are receiving retention offers - did you receive one recently/last year as well?

SPG Personal with July AF: Today I got the $75 credit or 20K "points"; both requiring $2K spend in 3 months. Agent was up-to-speed on the "points" being the new points and thus Marriott points. I took the points option as I've had the card for a long time and, while no free night this year, I'll hang in there...

Same here! July AF (so no free night until next year), but got the same retention bonus...though I was all ready to cancel to sign up for the Marriott card for the 75k bonus (only good until 8/26 if you have existing Marriott/SPG card). I took the 20K MR pts (yes, agent said it was MR pts, not SPG) for $2k spend in 3 months.

Took the 20k pts for 2k spend in 3 months

I didn’t want to close my card because I have some upcoming stays at SPG properties. Annual fee hit last month, so I missed the free night certificate by a few days. Was offered $75 stmt credit or 20,000 points (new points, not SPG points), with 2k in spend within 3 months of today. Took the points. Hopefully I’ll be able to make use of my combined point total. Whenever they end up combining by SPG and Marriott accounts.

Looks like they are getting stingy in offering retention offers on SPG personal. My AF is going to hit soon and one of the main reasons for me to keep the card with no retention offer is due to the fact that this is one of my oldest cards. I do have other Amex cards that did get the opening date of this card (when amex was still doing that) - does anyone know if my amex history, in terms of length, be intact even if I choose to close my SPG, since I would still have the other cards with the older date? Thanks!

Thanks!
Keep calling, I was in the same boat and had to call in a couple times. First time I called was offered nothing, eventually got the 20k points for $2k in 3mo offer, was first offered the statement credit but then asked if there was any points offer.

My SPG AmEx is my oldest card with history (19 yrs) by 3 years, so very inclined to keep it. With the retention bonus and now the annual night likely to just keep the card. Actually, got the upgrade offer so once the retention posts going to upgrade and do yet another challenge for points .

Never did a retention offer before do the points automatically post once you hit the min required spend (or the bill needs to be paid?). Want to make sure I get the retention bonus before I do the upgrade offer to Luxury. Got till 10/31.

Thanks!

Did SPG cardholders receive any sort of loyalty bonus for keeping the card through the merger? I ask because I received a mysterious 10K in my account when my monthly spend points posted this month. I have no idea what it is from and it is labeled "loyalty." I did have an outstanding issue with them for several months where they said they would give me 10K for I think $3K spend and they never posted it and basically said they never would, so I actually gave up on that a couple of months back. I would be surprised if this is that, but don't know what else it would be. Also, that was supposed to be 10K points pre-merger, which I think should have been 30K now? So I am still trying to figure out what they are.

Update: okay, I just called in about this and they said that indeed, it was the 10K points I was offered way back in November or December that they said they would never post. I guess somehow my appeal worked and they posted it. However, when I asked the agent in the department that deals with this about 10K SPG points not equaling 10K Marriott points, she just said that nothing else could be done because "that is just how it goes after the merger." It seemed weird to me. Honestly, I had sort of written it off so did not expect anything, but does this seem odd? Does anyone else have similar issues where SPG points promised before the merger end up coming as the same number of Marriott points?

20k points for $2k in 3mo offer

Received and accepted.

I called the direct retention number today and explained that my card had just come up for renewal and I was thinking of cancelling because of the devaluation. I asked if AmEx was offering any incentives to stay. The agent engaged in a friendly update--scripted, I presume--about the new, free night credit; the airline transfer partners; etc. Then offered me the retention offer.

Run a copy of your free credit report. Do all your AMEX accounts show the same open date? I bet the older date is only showing on the face of the card.

Even if they do show the same date in your credit report, there could still be a credit score hit with the cancellation since some of the FICO scores utilize an average credit card age and the cancellation could change the average.

Cancelled cards still remain in your report and in the calculation for average age, for the next 10 years just as an FYI. There is hardly any noticeable hit from the age.
What may hit you is the reduced aggregated available credit versus the utilization especially the canceled PERSONAL cards have high credit lines. Business cards are not reported so have zero impact on the reports.
