Benz crashes wedding plans
May 3, 2012 1:00 am The Nation (Thai newspaper)
Even if you haven't been invited to the wedding reception of actor Chatayodom "Chai" Hiranyatihit and actress Sunisa "Vicky" Jett on May 16 you've probably heard that the venue has been changed from the St Regis Hotel to the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok.
The couple says the St Regis booked a seminar right before their reception, giving them just one hour to decorate their hall. The hotel assured them it wouldn't be a problem to prepare for such an elaborate occasion in such a short span of time, but Chai and Vicky were not convinced.
"Vicky couldn't sleep after hearing the news," says Chai.
It was such big news that Channel 3 covered it on their morning news programme, with outspoken co-host Pornchita "Benz" Na Songkla sniping: "I am willing to spend my own money to see if the hotel could create the wedding party within an hour like they boast."

Given the strange ideas about service that this hotel has, I would not be surprised if it was true.
When I was staying there last, I was standing in the lobby trying to decide which of their restaurants to have dinner at. There was some fashion event happening in the lobby bar. As we were standing outside the main restaurant where breakfast is served, one of the hotel managers (not the GM but the other main guy) came up to us and basically told us to leave. Presumably he thought we were lurking and somehow crashing his event.
We were paying guests standing in the main lobby area of his freaking hotel trying to decide where to eat dinner! Not exactly what you expect at a St Regis.
I was so annoyed and surprised by this attitude that we stormed out and went to the Italian restaurant next door at the Four Seasons, which was amazing and I'm sure much better than the Jojo Italian restaurant at the St Regis.

No I do not, since I am not personally involved (and neither, I believe is anyone here). The article is just obviously one side of the story, and I reserve judgement on this particular case until I am aware of both sides.
Just to be clear, I am not commenting on other posts by FTers, just the Nation article.

I've had a decent experience staying here, perhaps mostly I was upgraded to the Metropolitan Suite. The suite was fine - no funny smells as mentioned by a previous poster. Service levels were a tad uneven - embarrassingly enthusiastic greeters and porters on the first floor, and very polite staff at the check-in area, but some of the staff at Viu seemed less eager to serve. Anyway, I don't think it's fair to expect 100% the same service levels or culture at St Regis Bangkok as you would in New York or Rome etc.

why shouldn't you expect the full St Regis experience regardless of which property you're staying.............thats their motto and that's what they expect you to pay for, so............

i have received better service in bali than new york & rome....so i believe its more than fair to expect 100% the same service here in bangkok....st. regis is st. regis, doesn't matter where it is in the world....

I've stayed many times in Bangkok at the Mandarin Oriental, the Peninsula, the Sukhothai and several other perhaps "lesser" hotels (e.g., The Sheraton Sukhumvit, the Conrad, the original Westin that is now the Banyon Tree).
Based on the service levels at those hotels compared to what I have received at the St. Regis in New York and the Westin and The Eden in Rome, I don't expect 100% of the same service levels or culture at the St. Regis in Bangkok.
I expect 150%.
