David Kurland was the old manager.

Anyone know his story?

Amazing resort with great food and service!

I would like to say that I read almost everyone's posts on this resort, and I was a bit worried when I had already booked, knowing that some people had a horrible time. We just came back from spending a 3 day weekend there, and everything was fantastic. We had a gorgeous room, and worked with some amazing staff. The butlers were friendly, the service was great and the food on the property was a first class. So here is what our itinerary looked like:

Thursday Night:
11:30p Arrive from JFK-SJU
12:30a Picked up "Charlie" rental car
1a Drove to resort--took 26 to 66 to 187
2a Checked in and ordered in-room dining

Friday:
7a Wake up call and butler arrived in golf cart soon thereafter
7a Coffee at Plantation House
8a Breakfast at Fern: ordered Eggs Benedict and French Toast
9a Drove to Amigos Grocery: picked up wine and beer (much more affordable than resort)
10-3p Relaxed on Beach
3p Drove to Loquillo Kioskos: DO NOT DO THIS (unless you like Tijuana) We ordered food at La Parilla, and they ruined a perfectly good lobster by smothering it with cheese wiz. We sent it back, they gave us attitude, and we left to go back to the resort.
6p Walked on the beach towards Molasses
7p Ordered appetizers at Molasses
8p Swimming and poolside champage

Saturday
7a Wake up call and butler arrived in golf cart soon thereafter
7a Coffee at Plantation House
8:30a Arrived at Boat House for Canoe rentals
9a-11a Canoed around property
Noon In-room dining and nap
2p Walked on beach and swam at the pool
6p Got ready for dinner at Fern (higly reccommend ordering the grouper)
8p Cigar and drinks at Plantation House
11p Packed bags

Sunday
Drove to airport
Left for NY

The worst thing about this trip was leaving!!

No, seriously, the worst part of the trip was the Kiosks. Do not be fooled, even if you like to venture out, it's not worth it. The place is seedy and unkempt.

Lastly, please note that the resort is practically in the rain forest, so if you don't feel like hiking, you really don't need to since the property is lush with tropical plants.

We will be coming back to this resort very soon! I wish we were still there.

LOL. I'm not a fan of Cheez Whiz either, but it works pretty well for me in a Philly cheesesteak. Probably not so much with lobster though.

Kiosks (plural) all bad due to your one (singular) kiosk experience.

By definition, this is one person's opinion. It is this person's Trip Report (which we appreciate).

I think most Flyertalkers understand that this is one data point. Not sure you need to rolleyes to someone that graciously posted their review, right?

Without these reviews/opinions, Flyertalk would certainly be worse off.

One isn't allowed to rolleyes at a statement if someone has posted a reveiw/opinion?

A few of your own rolleyes, pot meet kettle

Any hurricane damage?

I'm heading down to the St Regis for five nights late next week -- anyone know if the property sustained any hurricane Irene damage? I called the Platinum line but they didn't have any information and the site simply says "hurricane warnings" (helpful!).

I'm scheduled to go this weekend and am working on gathering information - will update as soon as I hear anything.

Off to a bad start this morning as no one is answering the phone at the property, nor is it even going to voicemail.

Damage

I was at the Resort during the hurricane... There was substantial damage to the landscaping and beach... however. I bet the resort has a majority of it cleaned up and you won't notice much by the time you get there. Cleaning the sand out of the massive pool/hot tub will probably big the biggest concern.

On a side note... it is a very very nice resort and they were very accommodating when my group was stuck there (we had to stay and extra night). The rooms are so nice we barely noticed the hurricane outside.

Thanks, this is very helpful information -- I'm glad to hear that there wasn't any major damage! I figure this just means more pool than beach for us!

Do you think everything will be okay by Labor Day weekend (September 3)?

Update

I spoke with the property late last night, and have decided to postpone our trip.

According to the manager on duty, they never lost power in the storm (because they had backup generators) and did not suffer any real damage.

However, the restaurants were not scheduled to open again until today and there were other facilities including the golf course that would not be open until this weekend at the earliest. Much of this was due to the very heavy amount of rain they received. They had not been able to do much in the way of cleaning the pools and beach because of the ongoing heavy rain as well.

The weather was supposed to clear by the weekend and they expected to be good to go by the end of the weekend, so I expect anyone traveling next week will be in good shape.

But we were scheduled to arrive Thursday and leave Sunday, and I think they're still going to be in the middle of it. They waived any cancellation/change penalties and we'll be going in a month or so.

Thanks for the exceptionally helpful update - I'm sorry your trip must be postponed but that sounds like a sound decision and it also appears that my trip down late next week should be okay (now, of course, I'm also worried about my house from this hurricane!)
