A very belated thanks for this info, William. Any update on whether and when it will be joining Starwood, as well as the renovations? A very recent (and possibly misinformed) review at Tripadvisor says that in 2013 (?) the hotel is slated to become a Westin (??). The review also claims the hotel is in need of renovation - and other reviews make no mention of renovations going on - which I guess means the work hasn't started yet.

The word came today that this hotel is still undergoing renovations and is still slated to become part of The Luxury Collection sometime in 2013.

This doesn't really add anything to the info William already shared, but FWIW this is the response I received from the hotel when I queried about when renovations would begin and end:

Dear Mr.

The redesigning of the hotel will be taken care of gradually for all this year.

Kind Regards,

Just got this response to a query I emailed the hotel:

Dear Thunderroad,

Approximately in July 2013 the Palacio del Inka Hotel will be part of Starwood Luxury Collection Hotels, around this time the renovations will be finished.

Kind Regards,

I'm not sure what the FT protocol is for including specific folks' names in posts, so just to be on the safe side I've XXX'd it out.

Thanks for posting this, Astrophsx. You made my day, as I'd been hoping it would join SPG before our planned visit to Peru in September. Given that Tambo del Inka, Paracas and Westin Lima are all Cat. 5, could well be that this property will be also. But I guess we could be pleasantly or unpleasantly surprised.

I'll now move on to hoping that there will be C+P availability. Or even more wishfully, that somehow there will be some great introductory rate to commemorate it's joining the program.

Now showing as opening July 1, 2013. They've pushed it back as part of a deliberate conspiracy to keep me from staying there on points or C+P.

Just heard that this will open in the next 30-45 days. They are hosting "events" there already, whatever that means.

Arrghh ... still not bookable though ...

Is this hotel convenient for those visiting Machu Pichu and other tourist sites in the area? Would like to book Starwood to save money but only if its not terribly inconvenient

The Tambo Del Inka is about a 40 minute cab ride and is a more secluded. It felt more like a great place for a retreat. I believe it went up a category level a few months ago. If you aren't worried about money you can take the train directly from the hotel. Otherwise it's a cheap 15 minute cab ride to the train station and I believe the train ride is shorter from this city than Cusco. The hotel is very close to the sacred valley.

Palacio del Inka is in the city of Cusco. Tambo del Inka (the other starwood) is in the sacred valley. They are at least an hour apart by car.

So, to address your questions. The Palacio would be more convenient if you plan to visit the sights in and around Cusco. As for going to MP, if you join a "tour", more of them leave from Cusco than the sacred valley. You are going to have to go by rail and there are stations in both places.

Hope this helps,
SF
