We stayed here recently so I decided to post our experinces, particularly because some of the negative comments posted had made us a little apprehensive.

Check-in was professional, however I was not offered an upgrade - booked a Grand Deluxe King and was asked if this was OK by the agent - erm no, I would prefer a Suite please A Grand Deluxe Suite was then "found" for our 2 night paid stay. The upgrade followed a little pressure from me and was agreed to by "a manager" out of our eyesight.

The room was a lovely one bed suite (The Sakura Suite) and the decor of the room was impeccable as was the finish. Top quality. I did not see any evidence of stains/dirt/wear. The view out the windows was great and the wonderful butler came to the room to explain everything including the very high-tech curtain/light/TV/DVD controls and of course the well stocked mini bar & he explained that it was FOC just once during our stay. Much better than an Executive/Club Lounge, IMHO. we didnt consume all of the contents nor did we clear it when we left.

We had breakfast in the Italian once and in the French restaurant once. Italian but French ^. The choices were a bit, well, odd really. They try too hard to be "fancy" when they should keep it simple BUT use high quality ingredients. They did neither brilliantly, but (as with most buffets) if one chooses carefully, then its a decent breakfast. No complaints from us. Service was a little nervy & fussy but will improve with confidence. Breakfast choice is wider in the Italian. but the atmosphere didn't appeal as much as the French. We were offered refills of coffee & juice but somewhat erratically.

We experienced no wind-down for the last 30mins of brekkie and never made it down there more than 30 minutes before the end of service

We had dinner in the French restaurant too - it was very very nice and of high quality. The Head Chef came out of the kitchen speaking to guests and customised theings for Ms NoY ^ Great service too - we also used the 5,00 Yen credit towards this dinner that came with our package which helped with the bill.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. This is a very very nice property, finished to a high standard. The location is excellent for exploring the city.

OK, there are some very minor teething problems, but nothing that will not be ironed out. Surely it will be a well oiled machine soon. I would def. return as a paying guest. A lovely stay ^

Maybe but it's been open now almost four months and I at least am disappointed to read that there are still service issues. For a hotel of this level (and price), service is a major part of what's paid for.

To take a trivial example - how hard is it, for example, to arrange for refills of coffee and OJ during the breakfast service which happens every single day ? This in a country like Japan where service is usually exceptional.

The StR OSA needs to seriously raise its game and fast. People won't keep giving it the benefit of the doubt...

Everyone likes a different kind of service. At a buffet, I prefer to asked my drink choice when I'm seated, and for plates to be cleared when I stand to get another. Otherwise, I prefer to raise my finger to attract staff if we require anything, rather than be interrupted every 2 minutes. Afterall, it's a buffet, not a la carte. Of course, this is just my preference, and only at buffets.

I inspected this property last month and felt that the suites were not necessarily the best upgrade. The supervisor who showed us around even mentioned that the different shape of certain rooms, and the openness, was preferred by many to a suite. I tend to agree.

I agree with the last post. The shape or layout of a room/suite is utmost important to us.

wow, big downgrade especially when considering the price of minibar items. Wonder if it is the same for paid stays?

This is a paid stay. But, the good news is the opening special rate is a really good deal. As for the 5000JPY food credits, the cheapest set meal in both restaurants are around 4000JPY per person.

On their site (http://www.starwoodhotelsjapan.com/s...US_ST_3198#545), it says
• Validity : Within 6 months from your check out date.
• Weekday nights only (except Friday)
and if you go through a booking, the Terms and Details popup says
Sunday to Thursday only.
So we have three different versions. Which is right?

Also, let's say we want to stay there for two nights. Can we pay for the first night, check out, and use the voucher for the second night (which is a Thursday, so it fits all three definitions above)?

My apologies, at the moment, I only have an answer to this question and the answer is no. The voucher can only be use for the second booking. Unless the second night belongs to another booking, you would not be able to use the voucher as described in your post.

Checked out of the hotel yesterday. This is an excellent choice in Osaka and is certainly a big upgrade from the other Starwood choices in the city. Still a few minor issues but overall a fantastic value for money especially for plats. Will post a more detailed review when I have time either tonght or tomorrow.

Looking at those rates and NUMEROUS promotions this place is hurting. Seems like they just never got it right.
