He immediately offered a $50 gift card to offset the difference. I really didn't feel I needed a gift card as the retailers were not ones I usually use, so I declined. I asked if they had any points bonuses they could offer instead and he offered 4000 spg points. I said no thank you and said I would still cancel the card. He asked me to hold and came back offering me $100 gift card, which I still didn't think I would use, so I asked for 10000 spg's instead. He offered me 7500 and I accepted. I'm looking at this as a $.016 per point purchase which isn't too bad. Still wondering if I shouldn't have just cancelled though. I was surprised at how much they didn't want me to cancel.

FWIW I had an annual spend of about $15000 on this card.
You could have got 20k points under current promo, if you cancelled your card and then re-apply.

I realize that, but I just go a new Amex Gold Rewards and wasn't sure I could get another amex right away. I may still cancel though. That $120 fee still irks me.

I left a note at Urban Fare (grocery store @Vancouver, BC) about AMEX PINs not working (Moneris Terminals). Someone from customer service called me the next day and said she followed up with head office for me. ^

The update for compatibility is not coming until summer 2012!

I have done this early this year, cancelling and re-applying were three days apart, but YMMV.

Technically, Amex Gold is a Charge card (no preset limit), and SPG is a Credit card. I don't see why they wouldn't give you both.

I did it the other way around. I applied for a second card and then cancelled the older card just to get sign-up bonus.

I wish there was a promo that waived the first year of annual fee... I'd switch from the Gold Rewards card if there was!

The fee waiver promo occurred when the card was first introduced and also coincided with the 1st yr anniversary. We'll see if it's a regular thing.

I think it drops to 10,000 pts when they waive the fee

At 20K you're essentially buying the other 10K for 1.2 cents each. Not a bad price

Signed up for the card on December 14th.

At that time, I remember the promo was 20k points at sign-up (10k + 10k when you spend 5000$). I don't see any mention of the bonus anywhere in the documentation I was sent, I just received the card this week.

I want to make sure that I'll get the 20k points, for 10k it's really not worth it for me.

Does anyone remember the december Amex Spg promo?

Yeah, but the big difference is that it's 15K points and no fee. The last one was 20K and full fee.
