How can they refuse the sale because you want to pay with coins

If its a legal tender how can they refuse to do the sale? I know everyone use this program for points, but the point of the program is to actually use the coins....

It is legal tender for all debts. When no prior debt exists, yes, they can refuse them.

Most merchants will want to make the sale first, send the coins to the bank & Fed later.

Just to add to the "Look, Amex is happy for the cc fees on the purchase - no question" comment... I agree with others that they're not necessarily happy with it because I tried to make that point to the CSR several times when I was talking to her. I asked her why she cares since I have several years of perfect payment history, a great credit rating, income that can more than support these purchases (wheather or not they are coins), etc... her response was that they need to protect themselves from risks. I repeatedly asked her what risks she thought I was presenting and she didn't have an answer.

But, she also mentioned in passing about not being able to buy cash equivilant items on your credit card. I then told her that AMEX should take this up with the Mint, not me. The Mint is a retailer who accepts AMEX as payment and now she's giving me crap about it, so who's to say that won't happen at Wal-Mart next time I go there? She didn't really have a response for that and just reiterated that they "may" cancel my card if I continue to buy them. lol In reality though, it's true... they allow a retailer to accept AMEX as payment, then decide after the fact that they don't want people using AMEX at that retailer. Why come to me about it? Shouldn't that be something they go to the retailer with (Mint or otherwise)?

Anyway... I've just had to switch my strategy a few times and I'm sure I'll have to do it again soon. It's a cat & mouse game for some reason. I don't know why they all make it so difficult!? haha

A "rat" that has 9K mileposts in FT & 5K mileposts in FatWallet has already released itself from its cage. If you don't want something public and often hightlighted in Google, don't post about it in either place.

I have been using my coins everywhere around New York City and the success rate is about 90%

Not everyone wants to take the coins as legal tender... some ignorant clerks don't know if they're real... others come up with BS excuses... its a luck of the draw.

But at least I'm happy I'm using mine as intended.... I can already see the bottom of the shoebox under my bed, LOL

Its a good way to stick to a budget too...

I only buy as many as I can use in a month, and so far in NYC+suburbs they have been accepted everytime. I use them a lot for $5 cab fares and am always met by an amused look.

WOW! I've used them a few hundred times and never been denied. I haven't been in NYC, but I have used them for: cab rides, produce stands, Specs Liquor (give a 5% discount for cash), local pizza place, etc.

The same way some businesses refuse to accept anything larger than a $20 bill for example. Or refuse pennies for that matter. Many people/businesses only want the fewest number of pieces of currency/coin possible for the transaction. A lot will get annoyed if you try to pay for (or deposit) $100 in singles rather than 5 twenties. It's often a matter of how much trouble they have to go through given the number of bills/coins involved.

So, for anybody who has ordered e-gift certificates before...

How long does it take for them to send the email with your gift certificate #? From the description, it made it seem like it would be in the receipt email, but I don't have one in my email receipt.

Are they actually sent out manually (which would mean not until a normal work day)?

Thanks a lot!

-Brian

I received mine the same day (around 3 hours after I ordered). The order was placed on a weekday, though.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I basically just wanted to know if it was a separate email that was sent and you answered that.

Thanks again
