No coins = no tip...
Just got back from a trip to Miami. When I presented the cabbie a $25 roll for a $21.70 fare he balked (I pinch pennies at home, but I'll tip well for a quick, safe ride...). At first, the seemed to think they were quarters. Then, he started to flat-out refuse to take them. "Why can't you just pay me in cash?"
So I opened the roll, removed three, left them on the trunk, and walked into the hotel.
On the return trip from the cruise ship, a different cabbie smiled and laughed when I handed them a roll. "I'm seeing alot of these! Thank you!".
The second cabbie got the first one's tip.

On a separate note, I've recently expanded offering the $1 coins to my second car wash. I've noticed an interesting trend.
Car Wash #1, in Santa Monica, very liberal, younger crowd... rejection rate of the coins is about 40 - 45% on a regular basis. Any time a customers does not want the coins, we immediately offer bills instead.
Car Wash #2, in La Quinta (near Palm Springs). Older area, lots of retirees, very conservative. Rejection rate is MUCH lower, I'm told only around 25%. And in fact, a number of people have bought the coins in $25, $50 and even $100 increments when they see they are the presidential coins.
I would have thought that an older clientele would have a harder time accepting something new, but its been the total opposite.
I plan to expand to my other 2 locations in the Bay Area (good luck with that I figure... communists) sometime in the next month or two.

A little off topic -- I'm in Miami and have had more than a fair share of poor customer service related experiences. I now ask the cabbie who takes the long route home, or the server who never returns to my table what they feel they deserve as a tip for their service that day.
I think we're all a little too accustomed to tipping generously. I like that you're actually rewarding good behavior! (To the second person that commented, this is wholly different from paying in pennies. We're talking about dollar coins, which are used primarily in many countries worldwide, and he was paying a $21 debt. I'd understand your point if it was a $210 debt.)

I would be very upset if AMEX did this too me. When were they appointed as the Coin Security Enforcement? Do they monitor who buys cigarettes and tell him to quit smoking? Do they monitor who's buying alcohol and a car at the same time (for drinking and driving)? If the Mint is willing to accept your purchase and charge it to a credit card, why is Amex getting in the middle of the two consenting parties of the transaction?

Every purchase with an Amex is a loan (albeit short life). However, when purchasing $2,500 in coins, Amex knows you fully have the means to pay back the loan, but if you decide to purchase $2,500 in booze, hookers and blow and assuming you don't have the means to settle the debt, Amex may have a difficult time getting the $2,500 back.

Interesting logic, but you must consider the booze, hookers and blow scenario.

Amex seems to be most p***ed off at those using their cards almost exclusively for coins. The key here is to vary the card usage by buying coins, booze, hookers and blow on the same statement.

I'm still receiving orders from January orders. 500 just showed up today from UPS. I haven't had any luck with new orders. All my AMX orders are still posting SPG points and I haven't had any issues with them yet. I did have have the fraud line call to confirm an order about a week ago but so far so good. Not sure how months of approximately 50k in orders triggered an unusual activity on my account.

In any case, they can't charge cash advance fees without prior agreement or a pin code.
