My apologies to the moderators for getting carried away, I got a bit worked up. It won't happen again.

On topic: My drycleaner loves them. I pay for my drycleaning and they usually by another roll or two. Co-workers are asking about buying them from me too for Christmas presents. $1 for $1 of course. Just trying to do my part to get them into circulation.

Fake or not, I think the important thing is that people should be reminded that this is real money and that it can be very easy to forget the risks that are involved. If a UPS driver is not asking for an ID I think that is something that needs to be changed. If they are insured for the value of the coins, that is the risk UPS is taking by not asking for an ID. UPS could potentially lose a lot of money and the person receiving the coins will have to spend a lot of time fixing the problem and it will just be a huge hassle for them. What I wonder if if drumdrum took this into account and is now trying to scam UPS knowing that they didn't check an ID.

If drumdrum started out with a $20k shipment, that was a very greedy thing to do. First off, if he received the coins, what would he have done if he had brought them into the bank and they told them they wanted a huge fee to take the coins or refused them all together due to vault space? Try to send them back? Tell the credit card company that he wasn't happy with the product and wanted his money back? That's a huge risk for a quick $200 gain. That's why most test the waters.

I think most people are using this to hit some sort of spending bonus or reach a certain status level. There aren't many people on here that are going through $80k a month, and if they are they have worked up to that level and developed a relationship with their bank and UPS driver.

A scam in my opinion is getting miles by purchasing items on your card and then returning them on your debit card so you can earn miles. I'd like to see what this guy's thoughts on the pudding guy are! I think there has already been enough talk about what is or what is not legal about churning and how we may or may not be helping the mint circulate coins.

I think there should be more discussion on if UPS is checking ID's or if there is even such a policy, I have not heard of any instances of UPS drivers stealing coins or having people stand at the end of a drive way and forge a signature. I've only heard of people being shorted a roll or two from the mint. If I remember correctly if there is a lost package, the mint is the one who UPS would cut a check to.

Apparently warnings were not heeded. A significant number of off topic and unfriendly posts from the last few days have been removed.

Moderators are not trying to restrict opinion and commentary. However when discussing posts made by others, please be cordial, and if you disagree, refute them with intelligence. Name calling and invective is usually not very effective in the world of debate.

Agreed. There is zero chance that the mint doesn't know about people buying the coins for the points, anyway. I suppose that a WSJ article or the like could drive so many people to the program that it could kill it, but buying and depositing coins is much more complicated than savings bonds.

Apparently the coins are liked in NYC

On a trip here, and brought a couple rolls to my favorite NYC dive bar: Rudy's Bar and Grill. They do not take CC, so it's a perfect spot to bring in the rolls, and at $7 a pitcher, the rolls do go far

At any rate, not only was the bar taking them without issue, but, a guy saw me paying with them and wanted to buy a roll. He said 'they're perfect for feeding the parking meters'.

I've discussed the coins with my UPS driver. He knows what's in the boxes. He thinks it's hilarious. He has told me that the shipments are NT insured. Think about it, though -- Why would the US Mint actually pay to insure the coins? It they are lost they can simply make more to replace the missing ones.

If that's true, then the US Mint is lying on its website:

There are other ways to insure than direct with UPS on a per package basis. It could be a separate insurance policy or an agreement with UPS that covers all shipments. They are obviously a good UPS customer

"Insured" on the Mint web site could refer to "self insured" by the US Government.

Yeah, that thought occurred to me after I posted, but I didn't bother editing because GoingAway cleared things up.

Thanks for letting us know that some UPS drivers skip the signatures. I would suggest calling UPS and complain. They need to follow their procedures.

It seems like some UPS drivers "skip the signatures" as a courtesy for known customers.getting a lot of shipments. Rather than calling their boss to complain, I'd think it better to just ask the driver not to do that. Personnaly, I live in a very safe neighborhood and used to like the fact that my driver would leave the boxes on my back porch, out of sight.

Now that I got a usual driver who insists on getting signatures all the time, I just have them sent to my office where someone in the mail room signs for them.

I'm hoping to get my back ordered shipment in time to pay the second half of our property tax on October 15.

Hopefully, this will be a good way to get rid of a load of them as the last time the coin counting machine broke in the middle of a count. We had to wait a week or so and call every day before they credited us for the full amount. That just added to the hassle.

We might just stick with casinos in the future.
