The Mint's site once said maximum of $500 per person, per president. I ordered $500 for myself and $500 for my wife. As of now, both our orders are still open and backordered till 7/16.

What risk? You're buying money at face value with no transaction fee or shipping charge.

The risk of the order being stolen from a doorstep, stored coins stolen from a house, etc.

Additional costs (not risks) include: the time to place the order, track the order (especially if shipping estimates, etc. change), the opportunity cost of having the coin value invested elsewhere (in the event you are spending them slowly, rather than redepositing at a bank), the value of your time and gas to deposit at the bank (if doing this), and so on.

I just had 2 orders (placed over 2 weeks apart) cancelled at the same time by the Mint (2 emails sent at the same time), so it looks like they matched up orders and cancelled mine for placing two orders...

Though, I swear the T&Cs said limit of $500 per order, not per person, per household, etc.

I interpreted it as $500 per President, per person.

The Mint says:

"Orders are limited to two boxes ($500) per President."

I interpret that as per person.

So I hope that each person in a house with a credit card could get 2 boxes.

If they are stolen from the doorstep, that wouldn't be the receiver's problem. That would be the repsonsibility of the shipping company or credit card company.

Can't really give FT all the credit/blame. This topic has been discussed at length in the FatWallet and SlickDeals forums as well.

I don't really think the Mint would see it as gaming the system anyway, since the coins do get out into the wild.

The biggest problem with those two coins is neither was much larger than a quarter, especially Suzie B. I remember when they came out; the cocktail waitresses in Las Vegas loved them because people often didn't realize they were leaving a $2-4 tip when they intended maybe a buck!

I still miss the Ike dollar; still have several, including the 1976 bicentennial version. Many football referees used it as their flipping coin before it was phased out. Yes, it was big and probably cost a lot to produce initially, but was the slot machine staple in Nevada for many years. I think the demise of the Ike started when the law was changed that allowed the casinos to produce their own dollar tokens for the slots, thereby eliminating the need for the Ike dollar coin.

I know that the presidential coins are a direct result of the popularity of the state quarters as a huge amount are taken out of circulation and placed in collections, from juniors little cardboard folder to the serious collector buying uncircs by the roll. How much of this will spill over at four times the price (versus the quarter)?

For practical use, the coin has to be significantly larger than the quarter or it may suffer the same fate as the last two coins.
