TD Bank bought Commerce Bank in 2008. Commerce Bank's 'lobby hook' had been the coin counter machine for more than 5 years before that. Commerce Bank offered the service free to their customers, 6% fee to non-customers. TD Bank continued the practice after the acquisition.
As they should.

I think this was previously discussed... but TD charges 6% for non-customers to use the Penny Arcade. It is free for customers of the bank. I am not sure when this started, but in the New York Metro area, it has been the policy for at least the last 3-4 months. There are signs on all the machines that disclose the fee.

I lost count, but this location has been there 20-30 years and has been at least 5 different banks over the years. Some got merged, some moved, but it keeps changing who it is.

Why would it be a noon move to ask who is having luck with which banks? I already stated that I realize it is a by branch sort of thing. It would be kind of stupid to open an account at each bank, try to deposit the coins and then close it if I didn't like their fees or policies.
Different branches of same bank in same area would have different attitude.
What you should do is to spend some time to read some pages of this thread and see the poster's locale whether his comments relate to you and then make an educated guess.
On top of that, if your sole purpose of opening a bank account is to deposit your coins you will very soon be listed Unwelcome - you need to have some sort of steady relationship with your bank(s) before you can bring them coins since for many branches the coins are indeed a burden to them.

Headaches?
It's not like she was rolling in with a handcart and $10K in coins. She then went to Chase across the street and had NO PROBLEMS. ^
The problem is that some banks just want to make money, they don't want to provide customer service.
As long as people don't care about lack of service and continue to use those banks, they'll stay in business unless some exec makes some stupid decision and puts them into a financial crisis. But if the bank is big enough the FED will step in and bail them out at tax payer expense. What a racket.

TD simply sticks to its policy that non-customer will be charged 6%. Nothing wrong with that. Except it could have been a bit more friendly by telling your Mom that this is the policy, but since the amount is such small change, they would do it for free JUST THIS TIME. That would be a good PR for them to do. Who knows? May be the tellers are under strict rules that they could get marked if they dont follow policy to the letter. Think about that, if they still do this for free for the occasional non-customers that walk in, others would complain there is no consistency in enforcing the policy. Customers would also complain - why non-customers getting the same benefits as the customers?
While I dont like TD, I have to inform you TD does not take a penny of Fed bail out - it is a CANADIAN Bank. In case you do not have an idea what TD stands for, it originally is Toronto Dominion Bank. They shortened it many years ago, just like HSBC stands for Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, originally founded in Hong kong and Shanghai in 1865.
Canadian banks are far healthier than their US counter part largely due to Canadian lending laws are much more restricted - they dont have 30 years mortgage for example, nor the benefit of writing off the interest payment on their tax return.
Chase on the other hand, DID take Fed bail out money although they had since paid back.

I wasn't referring to TD but to banks in general. As in any industry, when a company gets big, they often take it for granted that customers need them more than they need individual customers and get cocky.
Smaller companies, if successful, usually realize the value of their customers loyalty and will go a bit further to keep them happy. That's why I suggested trying a smaller local or regional bank for coins. The are more often willing to go the extra mile.

One of the most annoying things to me is some tellers attitude - they dont realize that it is because of Walk-In customers they still have their jobs.
The closet BofA branch from home has reduced its full-time tellers to just 2! All other tellers are part-timers for certain days of the week, at the busier time.

Boy we've got a great jump on reaching 2000 pages, probably a lot faster than it took to get to 1000.

My local Wells Fargo has been very nice in accepting rolls when I have been unable to use it all up. I use to use Chase and they complained every time.
