Smile Moneygram transaction counts as MS spending for new opened Amex card?

I got divorced recently and need to pay ex the child support. The lawyer fee almost emptied my pocket, so I want to save some money. It seems I can pay child support via Moneygram, which has a low fee rate. I am planning to open a new Amex Platinum card and using Moneygram to finish MS spending.

I knew that GC purchase doesn't count as MS spending for Amex anymore. What about Moneygram? If it works, I probably want to give it a shot.

Any data points? Thanks in advance.

How are you saving money by paying a fee to send money for child support, as opposed to a check?

Moneygram has a low rate fee for paying child support, around 1.5%, while many cards have 2% cash back. Or, if this is counted as MS spending, I can get bonus MR pts by opening new Amex card.

you need to test it out with a small amount first. maybe $50 and see what happens. i assume the logistics work very similar to paying US income tax via web. meaning, no cash advance fees or issues paying large amounts. however, MG has tons of fraud so its high risk to banks especially with a new CC. its best to test first.

The MG fee for child support payments via credit card varies from state to state and isn't available at all for some states. There's no concern about banks considering it high risk--usually these payments go directly to the receive account for child support payments run by your state, not to a bank.
