VGC's for sign-up bonus spending, questions.
 

May I ask three questions please:
1. I've heard that AMX doesn't allow vgc's to count for the card opening bonus, true? Does it depend on where the vgc's are purchased?
2. Does AMX allow regular points-earning for vgc's?
3. Do any other credit card issuers have restrictions on meeting minimum spend with vgc's?

They don't allow purchasing prepaid gift cards to meet minimum spend for opening bonus. That includes Visa, Mastercard, and Amex gift cards. Technically it isn't allowed anywhere, but YMMV.

Purchases from simon mall are not earning points. YMMV if buying them elsewhere.

I think other issuers may say that buying prepaid cards won't count, but in practice only Amex is aggressively enforcing it.

I am monitoring this carefully. SMGC earnings is dead for anything AMEX. However, it appears, if one DP is meaningful, that buying a small quantity of GCs at Staples using my Amex Hilton card did not incur a loss of Hilton points or spend. This, however, is an n=1 so YMMV.
