Buying money orders from banks as an emergency gift card liquidation strategy?

I recently read that some banks and or credit unions allow people to buy money orders using a debit card.
They charge you about $5-$10, however it is better than nothing.

Has anyone here successfully used a Visa, pin enabled, gift card to buy an money order from a bank?

Many banks (including Citi) will let you buy a money order with a atm or credit card. I don't know about a gift card. They don't need the pin. They just check that your id matches the card.

And your CC will treat it as a cash advance and you'll likely pay 5% or minimum $10 in fees.

To add to your point, the subject line asks about a way to liquidate VGC's in an emergency. Buying them with a CC would not help in the liquidation of VGC's.
