THIS IS A NEW THREAD FOR 2018. The previous thread is here.
***If you buy gift cards outside promotions, you will earn ZERO points.***

Accepted tender: Cash, credit, and debit. Also available are mobile/contactless payment (Apple Pay, etc.) and mobile loyalty (card barcode via app).

Summary
Stop & Shop (S&S), Giant Food Stores (Giant PA), and Giant Food (Giant MD) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for a discount on the price paid per gallon on fuel sales at Shell and S&S/Giant fuel stations. $100* spend = 100 pts = 10c/gal discount. The particular rules vary between the three brands, and within Giant PA, the rules vary by location. Refer to the bottom of this wiki post for more information or links to official info from each brand.

You can earn gas points from both regular grocery shopping and gift card purchases (promotion only).

The grocery reward points (Go Rewards or Flexible Reward) can be transferred to either gas points (Fuel Rewards) or grocery points. The conversion rate is 100 points = $0.10/gallon or 100 points = $1 saving in grocery.

Additional Information

• A loyalty card is required to take advantage of gas rewards. They look like the above image and can be obtained either online (links at end of wiki) or in-person (at the customer service counter).

• The cards currently on promotion are listed in the current weekly circular and usually change every week. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank on the back.

• S&S and Giant (DC, DE, MD, and VA) allow you to redeem up to 1500 points ($1.50/gal) per fuel purchase, and points expire 30 days after the qualifying purchase. With Giant PA, there is no limit to the number of points redeemed at one time.

• Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program.

• Your ID may be required when buying gift cards. Your name and other info may also be recorded for purchases over a discretionary dollar value. Whether you're buying a $100 card or a $5k stack, your experience will vary.

• You can view your account online using the link at the bottom of the wiki.

• It's best to purchase gift cards at the customer service counter, but reports state that a single $500 gift card can be paid for at any register without an issue. Purchases over $1k will require manager authorisation with a physical key, which may slow down the queue. You can go to the Solution Center to save time and make things easier for everyone.

• Giant Eagle and Giant Food are different chains with different ownership, and this thread is not relevant to the former.

• If you have more points in your account than are redeemed for a fuel purchase, then the remaining points will stay in your account until their respective expiration date(s). For example, if you have 2500 points and debit the 1500 ($1.50/gal) maximum, you will have 1000 points left. Similar behavior if gas is ever below $1.50/gal before discount.

• If you don't receive eligible points with your purchase due to system or human error, you can have them retroactively added by customer service (in-store or by phone). Have your receipt and a copy of the advert. It can take up to 24 hours for keyed points to appear in your account.

I wonder if they actually switched the pattern compared to previous years. I sure hope not.

Id be very surprised if theres a V or MC anytime before Putins War is over. With gas over $4 a gal and Shell pulling out of its Russians investments too boot.

I assumed the promotions are funded by Blackhawk to sell cards. Is that not the case?

I have no idea but no way will BH give away say a max of $30 (@ 1.50 per gal) when charging $5.95, plus they have to pa the stores something. Im sure most likely all 3 Shell, BH and the Supermkt somehow all chip in someway

I guess most of the cost is assumed by Ahold. They are not paying full freight to Shell, there would be some favorable terms for the FR partnership.
For BH, I suspect there is some sort of volume discount they offer, hence the various retailers such as Staples and S&S periodically run promos so as to hit their targets

What does the price of gas have to do with it? One point is the same amount off per gallon if gas is $1 a gallon or $3 a gallon or $300 dollars a gallon.

Are you accusing S&S / Giant of being Putin sympathizers?

Its a S and D issue (Supply & Demand) and right now theres a shortage ( and potential if everyone refuses to use Russian oil), so the oil companys dont need to lure us in at the time, and to do so all they need to do is charge a few cents less then the guy down the. street

Shell just took a shipment from Russia saying they needed it till they can replace it otherwise they wouldnt have enough for Europe

The supermkts are having a hard time as it is trying to keep their shelves stocked. all equals no one needs to give anything away till this all subsides But the circs are printed up weeks in advance so who knows if they already planned a promo in the next few weeks, if not I wouldnt expect to see one for awhile , thats if we see it at all

Just did a brief search and don't see it mentioned, but both Giant locations asked for my SSN for GC purchases. I see some DPs on Stop&Shop requiring this, but never for Giant. Make that for what you will.

How many were you tryjng to buy? Never been asked for a SS# even in the old days when you could buy more than 2k at one location.

You can still do 5k like I did (Giant PA), they just need to fill in the paperwork. YMMV if they actually want to do it, sometimes you'll get a Karen who claims they can only do 2k because they don't want to do work (obviously you don't push back or risk a memo for everyone to limit to 2k permanently). The form requires SSN now, and IME 2k and up requires the form.

The gas companies have never been paying for the gas points. Many many stores sells gas under its own name so there would be a waste of money for any gas company to subsidize it and not even get traffic to their stations. Grocery stores use the gas points as a way to generate loyalty to shop there based on a product with in-elastic demand (gas) that the majority of the population has no choice but to use. It has never been an incentive to "buy more gas". Years of market data show that consumers are almost color blind to where they fuel up, the only two factors are price and convenience (think Sheetz).

Grocery stores also do no "give away" anything. Some very smart people craft strategies that strive to meet their overall goals. It does not mean they won't readjust their strategy based on the current situation, but if anything I would double down on gas points as the price of gas goes up in order to keep people loyal to my brand. It costs the store the same amount today to provide 1 gas point as it ever did, but with the cost of gas going higher the consumer will value that discount even more now.

The price of gas has gone up because it is sold on the world market. American companies will export more overseas since they make a lot more money there (gas $4/gallon USA vs $7.5/gallon Europe). The loss of 8% of our oil imports from Russia is a minor thing if they decide to ban it, no gas stations will go empty from this. We have more than enough capacity to pick up the slack with ease, but it is in every companies incentive to maximize profits so they will sell a good portion of the gas made in the USA overseas instead.
