THIS IS A NEW THREAD FOR 2018. The previous thread is here.
***If you buy gift cards outside promotions, you will earn ZERO points.***

Accepted tender: Cash, credit, and debit. Also available are mobile/contactless payment (Apple Pay, etc.) and mobile loyalty (card barcode via app).

Summary
Stop & Shop (S&S), Giant Food Stores (Giant PA), and Giant Food (Giant MD) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for a discount on the price paid per gallon on fuel sales at Shell and S&S/Giant fuel stations. $100* spend = 100 pts = 10c/gal discount. The particular rules vary between the three brands, and within Giant PA, the rules vary by location. Refer to the bottom of this wiki post for more information or links to official info from each brand.

You can earn gas points from both regular grocery shopping and gift card purchases (promotion only).

The grocery reward points (Go Rewards or Flexible Reward) can be transferred to either gas points (Fuel Rewards) or grocery points. The conversion rate is 100 points = $0.10/gallon or 100 points = $1 saving in grocery.

Additional Information

• A loyalty card is required to take advantage of gas rewards. They look like the above image and can be obtained either online (links at end of wiki) or in-person (at the customer service counter).

• The cards currently on promotion are listed in the current weekly circular and usually change every week. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank on the back.

• S&S and Giant (DC, DE, MD, and VA) allow you to redeem up to 1500 points ($1.50/gal) per fuel purchase, and points expire 30 days after the qualifying purchase. With Giant PA, there is no limit to the number of points redeemed at one time.

• Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program.

• Your ID may be required when buying gift cards. Your name and other info may also be recorded for purchases over a discretionary dollar value. Whether you're buying a $100 card or a $5k stack, your experience will vary.

• You can view your account online using the link at the bottom of the wiki.

• It's best to purchase gift cards at the customer service counter, but reports state that a single $500 gift card can be paid for at any register without an issue. Purchases over $1k will require manager authorisation with a physical key, which may slow down the queue. You can go to the Solution Center to save time and make things easier for everyone.

• Giant Eagle and Giant Food are different chains with different ownership, and this thread is not relevant to the former.

• If you have more points in your account than are redeemed for a fuel purchase, then the remaining points will stay in your account until their respective expiration date(s). For example, if you have 2500 points and debit the 1500 ($1.50/gal) maximum, you will have 1000 points left. Similar behavior if gas is ever below $1.50/gal before discount.

• If you don't receive eligible points with your purchase due to system or human error, you can have them retroactively added by customer service (in-store or by phone). Have your receipt and a copy of the advert. It can take up to 24 hours for keyed points to appear in your account.

Happy Cards

I have been following this thread for a long time but since I cannot participate due to geography, I have not considered how the cards that are advertised are being utilized, which is my question.

People are buying the selected GCs (for example this week it is Apple cards) for the boost in rewards points that one gets. But what do you do with the cards? I can understand that if they are VGCs, then the usual MSing parameters apply, but what about Apple or Happy cards. Are they used organically??

Or is there some secret sauce that I am missing.??
Certain Happy Cards can be used to purchase other gift cards that aren’t usually available for a discount - or at least not much of one. Bed, Bath &Beyond and Lowe’s sell GCs. 3 or 4 years back after a strong Happy Card promo at Giant (maybe 8x) I converted $1200 or so to Disney GCs prior to a Disney trip.

The cards that can be converted at Lowe’s are now difficult if not impossible to find - Happy Holidays with a physical card. They’ve mostly switched to online redemption for an e-gift card which can’t then be used to purchase a different GC. This had already happened sometime prior with whichever Happy card could be used in the same way at Home Depot.

I value a Giant point at 1.6 or 1.7c when actually used for gas as opposed to groceries since my fill-up (limited to 20 gallons) is usually 16 or 17 gal. Add that to my 3x TYP in my usual card of choice and at an 8x Happy promo we’re close to an 18% or greater discount on Disney cards (not taking into account opportunity cost of using a different card with travel bonus while actually at Disney). I was very satisfied with that.

i’ve done the same with some other cards that aren’t normally available at Staples or OD for a chase ink 5X.

So anyways, a long way of saying that Happy Cards are sometimes worth the effort.

Isn't it kind of embarrassing (and ineffective) to be offering only 4x on a merchant gift card? Like say you bought a $50 card, that would only give you 20 cents off gas, for a MAXIMUM savings of $4.00 on a 20 gallon fill-up. It's hard to think of many situations where the trouble of buyng and using a gift card would be worth that reward.

Everyone please check the Wiki, if you did youd see in '17.18.19.20 & 21 there wasnt any promos for V or MC at all in Jan or Feb so why should '22 be any different or any year going forward. PLEASE dont fill this thread up with posts asking when the next one will be or I need one, its not gonna make SnS etc decide to have one any earlier then they usually do which means nothing till March

Did anyone try cards beside what is pictured? I believe the ad also said “on selected gift cards” last time when Amazon was included?

If you are asking specifically about amazon cards the answer is no. I bought a $25 amazon card but got zero points.

Agreed that this a lame promo, and I’m certainly not in the camp of expecting any VGC MGC before March, but nonetheless disappointed to just now realize that this lame promo runs for three weeks! Until 2/17!

slightly off topic: Weis Market store ( in PA/MD/VA? ) is selling visa/MC GC at 2X rewards points everyday. the points can be used toward gas up to $1.00/gallon off. maybe an alternative to the Giant

Yes, they normally earn 1x so they’re a good regional alternative for the Giant/S&S dry-season. What you’ve seen is that some of the newer card designs (I believe) are incorrectly coded as merchant cards and are (for now) earning 2x everyday, and even 4x when they have a holiday multiplier going.

interesting. Can their points be used towards groceries, or is it only gas?

Gas only, with a maximum of $1 off a gallon.

Some stores are cash only, so it depends on your local Weis. Please tread lightly, as we don't want to ruin this one.

Mostly gas, a few discounts on dairy items but nothing notable or nearly as lucrative as Giant/S&S.
