THIS IS A NEW THREAD FOR 2018. The previous thread is here.
***If you buy gift cards outside promotions, you will earn ZERO points.***

Accepted tender: Cash, credit, and debit. Also available are mobile/contactless payment (Apple Pay, etc.) and mobile loyalty (card barcode via app).

Summary
Stop & Shop (S&S), Giant Food Stores (Giant PA), and Giant Food (Giant MD) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for a discount on the price paid per gallon on fuel sales at Shell and S&S/Giant fuel stations. $100* spend = 100 pts = 10c/gal discount. The particular rules vary between the three brands, and within Giant PA, the rules vary by location. Refer to the bottom of this wiki post for more information or links to official info from each brand.

You can earn gas points from both regular grocery shopping and gift card purchases (promotion only).

The grocery reward points (Go Rewards or Flexible Reward) can be transferred to either gas points (Fuel Rewards) or grocery points. The conversion rate is 100 points = $0.10/gallon or 100 points = $1 saving in grocery.

- - - - - - - - - -

Additional Information

• A loyalty card is required to take advantage of gas rewards. They look like the above image and can be obtained either online (links at end of wiki) or in-person (at the customer service counter).

• The cards currently on promotion are listed in the current weekly circular and usually change every week. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank on the back.

• S&S and Giant (DC, DE, MD, and VA) allow you to redeem up to 1500 points ($1.50/gal) per fuel purchase, and points expire 30 days after the qualifying purchase. With Giant PA, there is no limit to the number of points redeemed at one time.

• Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program.

• Your ID may be required when buying gift cards. Your name and other info may also be recorded for purchases over a discretionary dollar value. Whether you're buying a $100 card or a $5k stack, your experience will vary.

• You can view your account online using the link at the bottom of the wiki.

• It's best to purchase gift cards at the customer service counter, but reports state that a single $500 gift card can be paid for at any register without an issue. Purchases over $1k will require manager authorisation with a physical key, which may slow down the queue. You can go to the Solution Center to save time and make things easier for everyone.

• Giant Eagle and Giant Food are different chains with different ownership, and this thread is not relevant to the former.

• If you have more points in your account than are redeemed for a fuel purchase, then the remaining points will stay in your account until their respective expiration date(s). For example, if you have 2500 points and debit the 1500 ($1.50/gal) maximum, you will have 1000 points left. Similar behavior if gas is ever below $1.50/gal before discount.

• If you don't receive eligible points with your purchase due to system or human error, you can have them retroactively added by customer service (in-store or by phone). Have your receipt and a copy of the advert. It can take up to 24 hours for keyed points to appear in your account.

But you are not being fair.
What tuphat is saying is that for the same amount of fuel reward points, either one of his above scenarios is the same in expended points and dollars.
Of course, if you generate more points, you should be able to buy more discounted fuel.

Western Union frowns upon that. WU rules are "Card must be bank issued with cardholder's name."

But then you are also assuming that the person in scenario 2 needs those additional 20 gallons, which might not be the case.

Look, if you want to compare apples with oranges, go right ahead. But please, just be be honest & admit that true comparability requires the use of controlled variables, i.e., constants.

Look, be honest, you are for some reason sour that I questioned the need to spell it out again for the Lurkers and Slickdealers who are too lazy to go back and read the thread to see that the advantage that having points from both programs allows one to obtain a discount greater than $1.50 per gallon was already discussed, so you came up with a pedantic argument over my word choice of "double-dipping" into the points balance of two separate-but-linked programs and how it is different from "stacking" points from two separate-but-linked programs. You are quite active in the thread. If you really hadn't gotten it, I'm sure someone would have explained it to you in a PM. Rehashing it for users such as LazySlickdealsLurker and NewToPointsAndMS when people are apparently having trouble with their "buddies" doesn't seem all that wise, since those are exactly the type of people who sink ships when they get burned for stupidity then contact customer services of multiple programs.

If your example was to somehow prove the "stacking vs. double-dipping" that you brought up, I would say it misses the mark, because case 1 only uses points from one program, which would be neither of the two. Based on the examples, I see no difference to the terms in relation to Fuel Rewards other than pedantry, if that was your intent.

To me, your examples and the control you set (the necessity of acquiring 40 gallons of fuel/two fills vs. just "using all points") only shows that there is no advantage to using both programs if one party doesn't have the available credit limit to satisfy the other's party's need to acquire enough points to fulfill the control of 40 gallons at 0 cost, or if they have differing gas needs.

I'd recommend a pause of the above discussions. It is great info. We all appreciate it.

Need to use up all my FR $$. I can't use all.

Any More Discounts on MC Cards?

I remember seeing a lot of discussions on getting FR $ on MC credit card. Are those offers gone? or they are just not so important?

that promo died, there are still promos on the FR app, just none of them are much good - mostly just for buying things in-store at the gas station

It's not that much more expensive when you look at the cost per 100 FR points.

Buy 2x $500 VGC at 3x points: $11.90 in GC fees for 3000 points. 3.9666 cents per 100 points.
Buy 1x $413.90 Happy at 8x and turn into 2x $200 VGC: 3,300 Points for $13.90 in GC fees. 4.21 cents per 100 points

2x on VGC/MGC is more common than 3x, in which case happy cards are cheaper.
Thanks, looks like both ways (HD and BBB) are same cost wise. Never used HD before for VGC/MCGC, Can I buy VGC/MCGC with self checkout ?

HDs near me only sells $100 vgc/mcgc... BBBs are hit and miss. But 8x points even on $100s more than pays for themselves..

this thread isn’t about how each person should calculate the value of the pts.. this thread is simply about s&s/giant gas point promotions. Remember some peeps are too dense to admit when they are wrong. I’ve used pts outside my area for > 5 years

Same on HD near me. BBB is definitely easier when you find one that has younger employees. When the stars line up, it really can "more than pay for itself" to go the Happy route.

As for using points outside of your area, I started less than a year before the link-up with FR link came. Tried in PA a couple times without luck, but for the most part never needed to fill up outside of NY/NJ/CT anyway.

Now if only they would work at Shell in Canada I'd be set, but that's a pipe dream.

I shy away from last week's 3/22/2019: 8x HC. I had few occasions where more hassle is not worth it for me. I bought 2 HC Lady, intended to liquidate them either w/ Sephora gc or bbb route into 200 vgc. I left 2 HC on shelf for awhile, (life is busy) sometimes you don't liquidate right away. So maybe 2 months later, both store's POS says card invalid. (phone & online check both showing 206.95 value intact).

I'm kind of person hate human interaction. Panic and annoyed, I got rid of them in some very bad fashion. just want to share my exp. here.

Are you sure they tried to process as credit and not a gift card, like it says to do on the card? Because it says gift card on it, some cashiers try to process it as a GC payment and it will get declined.
