In my neighborhood Safeway this morning, cashier A had no problem selling me a $500 variable VGC for $496, via a credit card. A moment later, and 20 feet away, cashier B immediately demanded cash payment when she saw another variable VGC in my hand.

Ten minutes later, at another Safeway down the street, I had no problem repeating the transaction. (I have three J4U accounts in my family.)

Go figure. YMMV

nah, some cashiers make up own rule as they go. does safeway's official policy state cash only for GCs?

No one on this thread has ever reported seeing written policies. The rules are passed down by oral tradition by tribal hunters gathered around campfires.

I used Apple Pay to purchase my gift card today at my local Safeway. The CC used was a Wells Fargo Visa.

I tested the waters and to my surprise, I successfully used a Safeway gift card to purchase a VGC. Cashier acknowledged and loved that I was using a store gift card. I think I'll be using this route a bit more frequently

Just FYI it's against policy. No swiped cards are allowed for GC purchases period.

That's certainly NOT the case at Safeways in Northern Virginia. I have never had purchase of v/MC GC declined because I was using CC to pay.

store gc do not earn fuel points, but you can buy the gift cards at lowes and if you have the business amex with the 10% CB upto 100 synced you can get the cards at a discount

Your CCs are still swipe only? The chip card only policy is not hard coded in the register, but should be enforced the cashier/CSR because it's an payment-industry-wide EMV liability issue.

The system will allow it, but if you read the fine print, it is excluded. So if you have a "by the book" cashier (like I did once) s/he may not allow it.

All cards, with and without chips, are still valid. There was a liability shift recently whereby the party with the lowest security measures are responsible for fraud. Since Safeways accept chip cards, fraud may fall to the bank where they haven't issued a chip card.
