I was able to use MCGC today at WM. Had to do the usual cancel trick.

How much do you guys purchase gift card at Safeway each week? What is a reasonable volume? I was doing self check out at my regular store and a guy came up from nowhere asked me why I purchase so many gift cards every week ( roughly 6k amazon)? Obviously he is internal investigator for Safeway not the kind of store casher and they suspect some kind of fraud is going on. I explained to him that all i am doing is for gas points. He said he is going to file a report to headquarter.

What suggestions do you guys have to keep under the radar? Thanks

Did the investigator ask you how large is your gas tank?

Blackhawk Network (the gift card issuer and/or middleman) monitors gift card activations, so they alert Safeway's Risk Management department whenever out-of-pattern gift card purchases are made. The store also doesn't want to lose money due to fraud, and also doesn't want to be a party in a scam investigation. Certain popular cards involved in scams and fraud such as Apple, Google Play, and Amazon are monitored closely, as well as the open loop VGC, MCGC, and AMEXGC to thwart money laundering. All gift card activations are processed through Blackhawk Network, and they can disable gift card activations at the store if they suspect something is up.

If you want to keep under the radar, stop going to Safeway. They're likely keeping an eye on you now throughout the division, and it won't matter whether you're buying one $100 gift card, or you continue your $6k binge. If they question you further, just be honest. You're doing it for the credit card points.

Thanks for the input. I redeemed the gas points for gas pump and also used for the coupon thing. So purchased large quantity every week.
This go-to store is very close to my house and their self-check out is very friendly for gift card check out (no override needed for any amount).

Break it up to $2k or less per transaction, multiple stores too.

The bonus points on store GC are very lucrative for the gas rewards game. But how many times do you fill up in a 2 month period? Just 1 $6k purchase would get you 12 fill ups @ $1/gallon off....

My question is - what they heck are you doing with 6k in Amazon GC to convert them back into $ ??

I haven't purchased MCs from Safeway in a while (got some due to the recent promotion) and there was no card with the PIN in it like before. Is the PIN the last four now or do you always have to call in on these and set the PIN over the phone?

Thanks

That was my thought too. I don't see Amazon GC as very liquid.

The weird thing to all of this is we do have Safeway to blame for all of this gift card madness, they pretty much invented the segment and created Blackhawk. Then, quickly was able to show retailers how much breakage happens, like a massive amount.

For USB MC, pin inside packaging. For Meta MC, use the last 4 as pin.
Safeway and Staples (at least in my area) transitioned from USB MC to Meta MC.

Re Meta MCs — Neither the external packaging nor the T&C insert address using the last 4 as the PIN, in contrast to packaging from other GC vendors. Is it clear that the last 4 always works for Meta MC GCs, without having to set the pin thru the website?
