Hi - I am brand new to this but had a question specifically in regards to Safeway. I was browsing the supplier locator and noticed that virtually all the Safeways in my area are reporting Level 3 Enhanced Line Item Data. Based on this forum it sounds like people are still buying GC from Safeway anyway. I’m just wondering if I’m missing something on what makes it “safe” to buy gift cards from Safeway? It is the easiest option for me so I would love to just buy GC from Safeway if I can but so far my research seems to be telling me that it is a pathway to getting my accounts shut down since they appear to report line item detail.

I buy gift cards from Safeway on almost a weekly basis, for many years. I don't buy VGC very often anymore, but no issues even when I did. Just Amazon and other stuff. I do also buy groceries there, but never had any problems with American Express.

thanks! I was thinking I might do that - avoid the vgc there (maybe only at places that don’t report level 3) and hope Amex doesn’t mind the store gift cards

From a general understanding reading various posts in these forums, I feel the risk is when we are misuing the GC's to create lots of manufactured spends to meet minimum spending requirements to get a bonus and not in when you buy it regularly otherwise.

I have spent $90k+ at Safeway this year on VGC, and another few $K on actual groceries, gas, vendor gift cards.

No issues of any kind. I seasoned the card for a few weeks to start. 1 $500 VGC per day, ramped up to $3-4K purchases at 1 time. Smooth sailing ever since.

yeah I have gotten that sense too, I definitely won’t be doing gc of any kind to meet min spends!

Wow, haha maybe I can just be lazy and go to my local store after all then. Was definitely planning to start very slowly and will always be mixing in my regular grocery spending as well. I’ve read about some issues where they force you to ring up gc separately? Have you had any issues with that?

With that plan you should be fine.

I usually get 6-8 cards at a pop. 1 transaction, they check CC and ID and that is about it. There are a few cashiers who know me by face, I usually go early AM when it is a little slower than rush hour afterwork. And I usually buy a soda or a pack of gum along with it for good measure.

The limit, per an Area Manager for Safeway - $10K (with card fees) per day. I have not tested into that deep of waters with Safeway yet.

Are you paying $6.95 in fees for every $200 VGC??? That would be $3,127.50 in fees this year. What am I missing here?

If you've found am Amex supplier locator website with Level data, please share the URL. If you are looking at the Visa one, keep in mind that merchants can have different category codes with different credit card companies, and quite likely different Level data . So Amex may or may not be seeing what Visa sees. If your cc statement shows line item specifics you will know for sure .

My experience with business cards is that they are more likely to report Level 3, compared to personal cards. I recall reading that it costs the cc company money to get the higher level data, so they may only do it if it's something they think their customers value.

5.95 per $500 vgc. Variable load.

And i get 6 pts per $ on grocery spend w/ HH Amex. Pretty easy way to rack up the HH points and hit spend required for Diamond Status.

So you pay ~ 1.2% , i.e ~$900 this year on fees and use it to get HH points for use on hotel stays.. interesting.
How do you encash such a big load of GC's? transfer to prepaid cards or mo's ?

even one values HH pts at .50 cents plus addl free nite award & diamond status, would those pts & benefits justify a spend of $1k?

So if we assume only 6pts / $ spent on HH CC, then $90k gets atleast 540k hh points which if valued at .50 cents would come to $2700. Usually the points received maybe more too. So basically spending $900 cash to get benefits of $2700..
But whats manner can we safely liquidate $90k in GC's ?
