My local Safeway affiliate now requires a manager override for transactions over 2k. Does not matter at my location because the managers do not care, and it should not matter anywhere as there are not any restrictions on buying GC with a credit card, but just wanted to throw it out there.

Despite the managers not caring, it is best to draw the least attention to these transactions as possible, so I will be splitting purchases to get under 2k per transaction from now on.

There are restrictions--but they come from Albertson/Safeway, not from the government.

Albertson/Safeway has had a policy of a $2K limit for Visa/MC gift cards per customer for many years. The limit is $2500 for the other gift cards. The cashiers are required to check ID and match the ID with the name on the credit card being used for purchase. Purchases of that size or over also get phone calls from some outsourced security asking about the transaction.

Most of the stores I go to don't care. One store has a fit whenever I show up--I'm told I MUST buy the cards at the customer service desk and my full information is always taken down and an SAR is submitted, even though I've done this sort of thing for years at that store. It's a PITA, especially when I'm also buying groceries and thus have to stand in two separate lines, so I almost always avoid that store now.

Going to other stores to circumvent the policy is also against the rules. I was banned from purchasing any Visa/MC gift cards a few years ago, when I would buy the limit of $10K then at a customer service desk, with forms filled out, then go other stores and repeat. Memos were sent to all district stores saying not to sell to me, including dozens of stores in cities where I'd never even been. I was shown the memo.

Only two stores ever paid attention to the memo, and then the policies and limits changed and no one seems to care any longer, except for my one "problem" store. BTW, the policy changes took effect when chip cards started hitting consumers--technically, you could make those $2K purchases only with a chip card....but no one paid attention to that.

Following up on that, I was trying to buy $7 in MEAT the other day. I bought a package of ground beef for $7.99, but I saw it was being advertised for $6.99 (which wouldn't trigger the cashback) so I bought a "meat stick" for 99 cents, figuring that whatever the heck that was I could feed it to one of my three dogs.

It rang up as DELI and not MEAT, even though it was in the meat department..

It's wonderful to have such problems!

Yes and seamlessly. I know this because someone was using my WA-registered phone number in CA and benefiting handsomely form my accumulated points. (Fixed this by changing the phone number, but believe there should be 2FA associated with the program, perhaps as simple as a 4-digit pin.)

Here's the current cooldown list. All other gift cards are currently unaffected although more cards are expected to be added in the future.

Card Type - Limit - Cooldown Period
Best Buy - $500 Limit - 5 minutes
Game Stop - $500 Limit - 5 minutes
Google Play - $500 Limit - 5 minutes
iTunes - $500 Limit - 15 seconds

How does the cool down work? If I buy 10 best buy gift card at $50 each, should be oK? Thanks

The limit is an aggregate so structuring purchases won't work. As long as no one else in the store buys a Best Buy gift card within 5 minutes while you're attempting your 10 cards at $50 each, you'll be fine.

The $7 off is a one-time use coupon if that was your reason for trying to buy 10 separately.

True, like the blogger who admitted to having 25 accounts or whatever, which is against the terms of Just4U.

Trying to buy 10 discounted gift cards in 10 subsequent transactions in such a short period of time to be worried about the 5 minute limit seems like a bad idea as far as trying to not get noticed, but maybe some would disagree.

Doing 10 transactions in a row will most likely get your accounts flagged by corporate loss prevention. As far as having multiple accounts, yes it’s against policy, but in reality, as long as there’s no major abuse causing significant loss (ie claiming multiple promotional free items meant for encouraging customers to sign up), multiple accounts are unofficially encouraged because stores are rated based on how many people they get to sign up (the first store you choose when signing up gets the credit) and percentage of people that use the program.

Are the redeemed grocery rewards for PNW Safeway separate from grocery rewards for Albertson's in the areas they more or less coexist (Portland, for example)? For example, in a given month, can you redeem a $10 off at each of the stores?

In Massachusetts, there are Shaw's and Star Market banners. If you redeem for a $10 grocery reward, it can be used at either, but you can't redeem for $10 at both separately. Delaware has both Acme and Safeway, but redeemed awards are good for one or the other, so you can redeem for $10 at Acme and $10 at Safeway. I also know it is possible to redeem for both East Coast Safeway and West Coast Safeway in the same month, since I accidentally redeemed for a reward in the wrong region when the preferred store accidentally defaulted to a California store.

It is per division. Each division may not necessarily have the same offers. All you have to do to get to a different division is change the location of your preferred store on the app.

So Acme and Eastern are separate divisions. Portland and Seattle are also separate divisions but Portland goes up into WA a bit (cut is around Longview I think but that may still be Portland Division). It does not matter what banner the store has (a Portland Albertsons and a Portland Safeway are both Portland Store for the purpose of the Rewards Program).

Acme and Safeway East are separate divisions entirely and that is why it works that way there.

Each banner's apps may also restrict your choices and deals to that particular banner. For example, in places where Shaw's and Star Market coexist, deals added on the Shaw's app will also work at Star Market, even though the same deals may not be available on the Star Market app. (certain deals don't even show up if you have the flagship Star Market store selected, but the deals added while having a different store selected will work anyway!) The Star Market app will not show Shaw's stores and vice versa. I'd imagine if you're in California, Albertsons and Safeway/Vons might have a similar behavior.

Here's a map of the divisions. It is outdated though as ACME has spread into New York and Connecticut as well
