Reload Card portion of transaction rejected

Rebuke me and send me in the right direction if this is common knowledge...

I bought some groceries and a T-Mobile reload about a month ago at Safeway. I paid with my Blue Cash Preferred, and the teller told me it covered $xx amount, leaving the $33 or whatever for the T-Mobile reload.

Not thinking (I don't MS with my Amex issued cards) I pulled out my Blue Cash Everyday and put the amount on that. It went through just fine.

The teller told me she'd never seen the error before but it said something about a cash equivalent transaction or the likes and that it was denied by the bank, not Safeway... It was a swipe transaction (no chip).

So the question is, does Amex have a way of figuring out what we're buying?

Thanks. I just learned a ton.

The obvious question from someone just discovering this...

How is grocery MS still a thing?

A lot of stores still don't have level 3.

Maybe the cashier was wrong about Amex getting declined. Maybe the problem that you experienced with the T-Mobile card at Safeway was probably the result of buggy point-of-sale software, and the cashier assumed/speculated that it was Amex's fault.

I can't let this go yet...

Are there any indicators of who has Level 3 processing?

I know I said I don't MS with Amex, but I just picked up the SPG and it's too tempting... There's no way the card would be beneficial to me without a little MS. I suppose if you find a place that isn't reporting what you buy, your account is a little safer.

Visa can show level 3 merchants.

Visa supplier locator:
https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator/search/index.jsp

Other way is manually checking your credit card transaction history to see if your purchased items show up, but this depends on the issuer sharing this information with you.
