Citigold Checking Account 40K Thank You Points

I just received an email from Citibank inviting me to open up a checking account with them. If you open up a Citigold account and have billpay for 2 consecutive months, Citibank will apply 40K thankyou points to your account.

How do they determine the value of 40k points? Or the 50k offer also available?

Code

I noticed that the 50k AA code is currently running generic. Does the 40k appear to be generic as well?

CITI assigns more $ value to 40,000 Thank You Points than you do.

Some reports indicate Citi determines the value based on how you redeem them during the year http://www.doctorofcredit.com/citi-g...comment-115254

Seems strange to me that they would go to this effort though, especially with other non-taxable point award sources complicating things.

They use the actual value of the points as you redeem them.
$400 worth of gift cards =$400 and no 1099.
$640 worth of flights (redeemed through Citi with the Prestige card)= $640 and 1099.

It's really pretty straightforward, and it is based on calendar year. So split the points between years if necessary.

Note this is only bank points, not cc points which incur no 1099.

Incidentally, when using this offer, do not overlook the benefits of how you fund the initial opening.

And on the negative side, don't overlook the fact that you can't use the points you get for opening/maintaining a checking account for transfers to partners such as airlines.

I am quite new to debit purchase. Does online purchase using this card count toward debit purchase? Also, can stores process debit purchase in Europe?
