I dont know the answer since I dont go to Target to purcahse my GCs. But I usually would simply drive over and try , worse comes to worse they dont.

I know with some supermkt chains some of the stores want only Ca$h, others will say Ca$h or Debit, some sat all 3. Sometimes it depends on the mgr at the time so on Mon its ca$h only and on Tues no problem with a CC.

It really is a day to day , mgr to mgr issue. Places where I couldnt get a MO with a DC or GC now take them and places that took them now say ca$h only

Thats why its best to simply go over rather then start a new thread and ask

There are 2 Targets close to me using the ATM at 1 = no fees, while the other one tells you theres a fee for withdrawing the ca$h, and its the exact same ATM

Target doesn't take CCs for anything. Sometimes cashiers do, though. Why don't you go ask yours?

Thanks just wanted to see what the general consensus was before I head to the cashier and the get told sorry sir no credit card for Gift cards.

just saw a small display today and no VGC on there so I have to look around to see where they keep those.

MS is always YMMV, as is ML. Both thrive on the breakdown of internal controls. Over in ML Central one of my banks just posted a sign that they will now be asking for ID when bringing in boatloads of cash. Maybe one day they will actually use SARs for those too stupid to just launder all their money through real estate transactions. Bienvenido a Miami, the land of the snowbirds!:p

Certain things (usually negatives) aren't YMMV. If something is hard coded into the system, it's not up to the capriciousness of different cashiers - it's hard and set and not YMMV. Given that OP was specifically asking about whether Target's system was hard coded to reject credit for gift cards, this is one of those things that may not necessarily be YMMV.

funny today...
I went in and tried to load...found this young kid...and i think he is new (because he tried to scan my card).

So i said, "can you "load" $200".
He said..excuse me...
I said, are you new? I want to put $200 into this card (waving the card).

He said, ohh LOAD...i thought u said LOAN.........!

lolz...yeah you can but the cards they sell are too low denomination=> too high cpp

I believe they do but the CPP isn't all that great even on the $400 ones and please, please, please don't liquidate them at Target within minutes of buying them because that will very likely get the loss prevention folks worked up and result in adverse actions. I always try to avoid liquidating what are purchase where I purchased it. If you are still going to do that, at least unpackage the darn things in the parking lot and come back to the store.

I respectfully disagree. Kennedy's law says there are only three things certain in life - death, taxes, and that internal controls degrade over time. You just have to watch and wait before the hard coding eventually gets screwed up by a coding mistake, system upgrade, or the like. Today the hard coding works, but internal controls ultimately rely on people, not machines, and therein lies their imperfection. Have faith in the folly of humanity. More times than not it is people who unintentionally bring dead things back to life, rather than dear old Marie Laveau.

Oooh...shall I grab my mini-van and start hauling coins to the bank once again? I'd be happy to drive through the Big Easy and pay my respects in return. ;)

The loss prevention folks are also monitoring the parking lot. If you really want to stay under the radar, it's best to come back another time or day. But that may not be practical if it's a long drive to your Target.

Saw $400 Visa GCs with $6.95 fee at Target. They can be paid for with credit card, debit card, and/or cash.

rubesl May 22, 2015 9:10 am

I buy $500 VGC at Kroger for $5.95, better deal than $400 for $6.95 at Target (my Kroger & Target are in the same center).
