I have never once successfully reloaded a card with $1000 when there was more than $1500 on it. I seriously wonder whether there aren't either two sub-species of cards or two sub-species of registers, since so many people report success at this.

That happened to me. Other than wasted time on the phone and waiting for the permanent card in the mail, all is well. Been using it for a few months.

Nope...AFT is run like a credit card as ALL AMEX card do. You cannot but MO's with a CC, just debit with pin is accepted (i.e. VGC) at many places and of course, cash. What state are you located in? I would recommend going around to local credit unions and try your luck with finding one that doesn't charge a fee. My local CU allows fee free withdrawls.

From the actual post:
If it allows you to go through by making a second log-in I would do so. Chills the risk of AMEX worrying about you having multiple accounts (although I know many do). MS can be a little bit of a burden sometimes, but I wouldn't worry about having so many accounts to log into. Same situation with MVD.

A number of banks contract with certain stores to offer fee-free ATMs. For example: My bank charges $2.50 to unload AFT, but it charges nothing at a local upscale grocery. Unfortunately it's pretty hit and miss. I haven't heard that PNC is offering the same deal in NOVA.

Basically, it's all trial and error.
Even this list
is wrong. For example, in south florida, there is no fee-free atm at any racetrac. Yet it is still listed. Basically, everything is regional. I go up to Pgh and I can throw a stone and hit 2 or 3 free ATMs.
Down here we end up going to costco. I've gone to every damn CU and bank around hoping to get lucky...nope.

This may be being enforced now. I was refused reload today in CLT (NC) by a cashier I've loaded with before. When I said I'd done it tons of times before, she gave me a very scripted "Any time we've loaded these cards in the past was a courtesy." She suggested I load the card at Walmart Moneycenter. When I pointed out that it's a Target card, she just gave up and said they can't do it.
