Apparently HT was targeted by criminals posing as employee's of the GC company. They would call and pretend that they were testing the system. With the test they would ask the register person to scan a value in the card, then once in to give them the barcode number. They said the test worked fine and hung up. What the register worker didn't realize is that the criminals would fabricate the card with barcode and get the value off of it. I was told this, who knows if it is true but for full details I documented it here:

Super coincidental that that's the same story as to why our favorite drugstore's computers now ask "is the customer standing right in front of you?"

I completely agree. Other than sale items, HT is ridiculous. Publix is coming to Charlotte soon so that will add yet another price competitor (Food Lion, Bi-Lo, Lowes Foods, Trader Joe's have not been enough). We will see if Publix can make a difference. HT is convenient, and that's about all it has going for it. I much prefer TJ's and do 80%+ of my grocery shopping there.

Don't hold your breath. Publix is overpriced, but competition is good.

Bought three with OV today so, probably. FL is better if available.

Please avoid mentioning places like this publicly. Take it to PM if you want to give him a heads up. No need to give the blogs ammo, even if this is just a regional chain.

Hmmm...as any ol' auditor knows, management would never lie about why they did something. If you believe otherwise, my bridge from Miami to Cuba is still for sale.

As to the threat from speedsters, where were the internal auditors and the internal controls to limit daily purchases?

I have some insight into the changes at HT. I swore to secrecy so will not reveal here but I will just say it absolutely was 100% to do with MS and nothing to do with some imaginary fraud scare. As is often the case the scare was more from one or two people doing extremely large volume that raised alarm bells.

I concur. Also, thanks for not jumping on this guy too hard. Obviously, this is a place to share. But, bow tie wants his credit card signups.

Anyone been to HT recently? They are a bit out of my way, so I haven't gone to visit in a while.

HT near me still have the GC displays up but always blank.

I take a peek occasionally when I end up in there.

Same for me, in Northern Virginia. Fixed denoms still there, but no $500 or reloadables.

Also, and I think this may be an isolated incident, but: I tried to buy a MO at HT recently and guy wanted to see card to verify it wasn't a GC, so that purchase attempt failed. Haven't been back to test.

I don't know if they sell MOs at my local store. I'm ok with fix denom cards since I have BCP.

Variables ain't coming back boys and girls

I've heard there was an actual issue with them. We'll see.

Thank god I finished my MS when I did. HT was my go to for $500 metabank GCs. I was always worried that gravy train would end soon.

They charge so much (relative to other stores) that they probably end up much better risk vs cost wise.

Hopefully that cost keeps the hordes of MSers away.

Not sure what difference that makes! The problem with fixed denom cards is the much higher fees to buy say $500.

ETA: OK, I guess the point is that you still can make a profit compared to a 2%. But what do you pay for $500 in gift cards?
