Purchasing MO at Post Office

I've read around the forum that OVs do not work at the post office. Are there any cards that do? I'm having a hard time finding a place in NYC that will sell me MO with a debit cards. (Tried all the big pharmacies, and few grocers) Any input is highly appreciated!

You probably need to provide more detail..

Are you asking about pre-paid debit cards, like OVs, Vanilla Visa, etc etc. Basically, "gift" debit cards. Or are you asking about *real* (even if reloadable) debit cards. In other words: they'd have your name on it.

I have no issues buying USPS MOs with the latter.

I meant buying USPS MO with OV and other gift cards. I tried using OV at USPS and card was declined for MO, and I can't seem to find alternative places that accept gift card "debit" (I never mention its a gift card)

The post office is running MO purchases as "cash advance," like you were trying to get cash out at an ATM. No prepaid cards of which I am aware allow this.

Several New Yorkers have suggested taking a trip across the river to New Jersey to resolve your problem....

Meh, it seems like there is no escaping Walmart across the river *sigh*

Is 7-11 cash only for MO? I went to one yesterday and asked the guy working the counter. He said yes but I was wondering if YMMV?

Or Western Union places? k-mart, ect.

I haven't tried a 7-11 yet. The one close by doesn't carry MO. Most WU places I've been are cash only and the one I found that accepts debit does not allow split tender so it's too expensive for extensive MSing but can be a good alternative if you're in a pinch. My local groceries don't have MO and I have no data on K-mart, etc. (Just checked 3 different 7-11s and they are CASH ONLY for MO)

There is a regional grocer here that had WU MO's I'll check them and K-mart out tomorrow.

Apparently there is a chain that does sell MO with debit in the city, forgot the name.

But if your google fu is strong,

1. Find out the two brands of money orders.
2. Go to their site.
3. Locate stores
4. Find out if they sell with debit.

Problem solved.

Coming to NJ is a waste of time, your Gas and tolls will easily kill all your profit. if you can't make it work... quit the game.

In Manhattan, try Rite Aid.

Shoprite No MO

How about Pay-o-matic in Manhattan?

Pay-O-Matic works but they don't allow split tender on MO meaning the cost is $1.99 for every $500 swipe/MO

Must be local policy, debit cards are fine at RA in Northern Virginia.

ramadugu Jun 11, 2014 10:14 am

I just called K-Mart yesterday in Iowa and they told me that no debit for MO here!

enwhycee Jun 11, 2014 11:03 am

I just tried kmart in NYC and they are cash only.

I did find a grocery store that has $300 limit for .99. What's the best strategy with that?

I didn't ask what the max I could purchase was..

So it's not worth it? What do you mean by split tender?

That means: That they allow you to purchase a Money Order up to $1000 at a time but will NOT allow you to use multiple Cards in the same transaction "Split tender." The effect of that is having to buy multiple $500 MO to unload cards.

If this was even somewhat viable at USPS, dont you think a much longer thread would already exist ?

Yes, but now most people here are interested in discussing Money Order solutions in the NYC area. Any input you have is highly appreciated!

Gotcha thanks.

Is my best bet the grocery store at $300 for .99. Or pay o matic for 500? Not sure of fee there.

Pay-O-Matic is $.99 + a debit card fee of $1.00 so that = $1.99 per MO, and they don't allow you to use multiple debit cards in one transaction so effectually the best you could do there is multiple MO of $498.01.

enwhycee Jun 11, 2014 1:17 pm

Ok thanks

newuser0 Jun 11, 2014 3:20 pm

Just tried the Pay o Matic today. Does they take your photo, scan DL for just ONE $498.00 MO? Is this usual?

Never been asked for ID at Pay-O-Matic

newuser0 Jun 11, 2014 6:29 pm

May be YMMV situation. Actually the cashier said the fee is $1.00 and I asked her MO for $499 to make this even $500. Later she asked me to swipe for $501 and I said I will pay $1 in cash. Not sure what she thought after this, She scanned my DL in the machine, Took my Photo from the webcam then entered my DL#into system and AT LAST She asked me to SEE THE DEBIT CARD.

I just gave $1 and pretended that not heard what she said, then she too did not asked me again.
