I agree that it is YMMV, but I was speaking specifically about the INK card.

At SM, $3.95 gets you a $500 GC, which nets you 500 points

The cost per point is:
3.95 dollars divided by 500 points

which is:
395 cents divided by 500 points

which is:
0.79 cents per point
$3.95 does not equal 395 cents.

wouldn't you be getting 504 points since you are charging $503.95

or 1 point for .078 Cents

sorry but you're the one mistaken. if you divide $3.95 by 500, you'll get 0.0078 which is closer to .01 per point and way less than 79 cents.

.79 of 1 cent equals .0079 cents. Therefore, cost per point is .0079 cents as pointed out by Mamibear.

No, you have to leave off the word "cents" -- it's 0.0079 of a dollar.

Can we all agree it's less than a penny?

Sounds like another case of Verizon math. (.02 dollars versus .02 cents)

I'm always running into new CSRs across DFW and they never bat an eye on $10k/$20k purchases. If you get a fraud warning, just step aside and call the fraud desk to clear up. CSRs are more likely to remember you negatively if your card gets denied and then you walk away, because they then have to destroy the cards.

OK...so I went for 1k. Decided to start small before reading these replies. They had me fill out a form PLUS called a manager for approval.
I told the friendly CSR I would be doing more of the same and would I have to go through all this each time. He said now that he knows me, he could get phone approval. So 10k next time?

Also, I was dismayed that my SMGC would not work at 2 Walmarts to get MO, even though I set PINs. I went to a local grocery store and they worked. Went that route since my perm. BB card has not yet arrived.

I suppose a lot of people are not math whizzes. Paul's statement is true. If you do the math at dollars per point, the cost is .0079 dollars per point. If you wish to caculate in cents per point, move the decimal point by 2 places, and now you get .79 cents per point.

And yes I agree that I forgot the additional 4 points we earn on the 3.95 fee. To fix the math, it should be 395 cents divided by 504 = about .78 cents per point.

If I could get points at .0079 cents per point, I would visit Simon every single day. Alas, I cannot get such a great rate.

Even for those who are math challenged, I love you all because I learn a ton from all of you on FT about earning miles and points.

Math is not easy. Let's try this again.

.79 of 1 cent equals .79 cent

If we switch instead to percentages, 0.79% of 1 cent = .0079 x 1 cent = .0079 cents

You only need to move the decimal point 2 places to the left when you're dealing in percentages.

Anyway, time to move on.

I think we should just let everyone do their own bloody math. If someone can't figure out how to get their own cost per point, they really deserve whatever happens to them because of that...

I vaguely remember the Verizon mess up with decimals, but can someone refresh my memory?

Also, that comment above about percentages angered me. Percent means per cent, as in one for every hundred. That means it applies to cents, one hundredth of a dollar, because they are per cent. Saying that you only need to move the decimal over when dealing with percent is extremely redundant because yes, cents are percent.
