If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

Current S&S promo: none

Current Giant (PA) promo: 2X points on AMEX ends 12/10

12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

FWIW for the gas can users, please understand the extreme hazard of static electricity + fuel vapor...
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/98-111/

tl/dr: at the least, place gas can on concrete and somewhat away from vehicle before/during filling

Thanks for the potential life-saving tip. It's also probably a good idea to ground yourself by touching a metal part of the car door after you get out before touching a gas can or any area near the gas cap on car.

$2.20 off

$2.20 off the price is the most you can get. For instance, I had 2400 gas points and the price was $3.46/gallon. So it was reduced to $1.26/gallon. But the extra 200 points were taken away too which is a little frustrating. Also, the maximum sale is 35 gallons.
So use a little planning when you're buying the GC, no sense in giving points back to S&S. It is a great deal and I'm glad I have two cars with large gas tanks!

Stop & Shop 2X gas rewards points on gift card purchases

I'm new to this store but today I shopped there and bought a variable load visa, which I don't ever find at the other grocery stores I shop at (PA). I ended up with a free 20lb turkey and 1600 gas points which expire Nov 30th. I had no idea (didn't need gas today) but I will go back and fill up next week. My questions: did I only get points for the visa purchase because of the 4x promotion and I won't get them on visas next month? Can I use these Giant points at a Stop & Shop in NJ where gas is a lot cheaper? If I buy another visa next week will I max out the gas discount at $2.20 even if I get over 3000 points?
Thanks for this great information on this thread! I may switch grocery stores after today.

the leftover points shouldn't disappear unless they expire 30 days after they're earned. i always stock up (usually close to 10K pts worth) whenever there's a gift card promotion and only 2200 pts are deducted with each fuel up

i cant answer all your questions, but to answer some:
you only earn points on gift cards when it's advertised - otherwise no pts
this current promo runs until 12/5
you can only redeem up to 2200 pts for a $2.20 discount at a time

Tried logging into my S&S account online this morning and got an error about "error updating your existing card account, please try again later." Anybody else seeing this?

Warning with some Shells in NJ

OK I jumped in for the 1st time (even thou theres a S&S , 5mins from the house,ShopRite is usually alot cheaper price wise)

PUed 2 GCs the other day, I read where someone psoted get a Shell GC as well so you pay the ca$h price and not the CC price apx 10 cents less per gal

In NJ its only full service,I gave the guy my S&S card which he put into the pump then I gave him my Shell GC but I saw the price on the pump still stayed at the reg ca$h price and wasnt $2.20 per gal less.He sort of explained that it comes off in the end. But since I had a $25 Shell GC yep once the pump got to $25 it stopped! just under 8 gals went in, he gives me the receipt that shows I still had $17+ left on my GC I tried to explain that I wanted to fill up and still needed apx 6 gals to do so but now those 6 gals wont be reduced by $2.20 a gal ( iI ended up using up my Shell GC)

Wont happen again, but becareful if using a Shell GC and S&S pts, either get a large Shell GC or dont use the Shell GC. I read where folks said the pump reflected the lower price per gal after the disc was applied. The attendant told me She;;; has a few different systems and each station and area is different

It wasnt a loss since I used a 2% CB CC so each GC was a $4 profit, the $25 Shell GC was gotten free from a promo and the price per gal was still .40 cheaper then by where I live. But going forward I will stick to using a reg CC in order to be able to fill up fully at $2.20 off

Its not worth buying say a $100 Shell GC since Costco 5 mins away was .07 per gal cheaper, so in the end it will pretty much be a wash

some info for those new to stop and shop's gas points:

depending on the individual station the number of gallons you can get with a shell gift card may be based on the pre or post gas rewards price.

ie with a $25 gift card assuming the price of gas is $3.60 a gallon and you have 2200 gas points to redeem:

at my usual NJ station i would be able to get 6.94 gallons ($25/$3.60)

at most MA/CT stations i can get 17.86 gallons ($25/$1.40)

also at stations with different prices for cash and credit, some will charge you the cash price with gift cards but others will charge you the credit card price. i try to buy the largest denomination shell gift cards i can find so i dont have to use multiple gift cards (allowable at some gas stations - basically you fuel up first and then pay for the gas). hope i haven't made this more confusing then it already is

I just checked on this and it's true. If you have more than 2200 points after getting the the gas, you're points will still be there. You still have the thirty day expire though.

Had this almost happen to me while on trip down to NJ. Attendant was kind enough to explain to me not to use the gift card as I would be wasting points. Waited to use gift card once I returned home....got the discount up front and the cash price.

I can't believe that I missed out on this, until now! Gas prices are climbing back up in my area (up 30 cents/gallon in the last 2 weeks), so this will certaintly help!
