If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

Current S&S promo: none

Current Giant (PA) promo: 2X points on AMEX ends 12/10

Current Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promo: none

Past S&S promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):
6/20/14 - 7/10/14 4x for VGC purchase

Past Giant (PA) promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):
6/22/14 - 7/12/14 4x for VGC purchase
6/07/15 - 6/13/15 3x for VGC purchase
7/5/15 - 7/11/15 2x for VGC purchase
8/2/15 - 8/8/15 2x for VGC purchase
10/16/15 - 10/22/15 2x for VGC purchase
12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

Past Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):
6/20/14 - 7/10/14 4x for VGC purchase
12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

Better: Look for old-style gas cans at yard sales, etc. Cheaper, plus you don't have to deal with EPA/CARB "improvements" to an already safisfactory design.

Question for those whose gas station offers a discount for car wash.

I went to the gas station earlier today with two cars and figured I might as well wash one of them for free. Went through the whole menu and when I picked the wash type the pump threw a message saying that I should see attendant to purchase the wash and didn't deduct the extra $20c/gal. I didn't have much time so we just filled both cars and left. Do all gas stations behave the same way? Should I just plan to wait in line to see attendant if I want to get the extra car wash discount? Thank you!

My hunch is you wont get the .20 further discount, unless you were paying full price = not using a discount from SnS or Giant.Otherwise they owe you $$$

Nope, that's not right. I get the basic $10 car wash every time it's offered and get 20 cents off. I pump 35 gallons so the wash cost me $3 ultimately.

There are times that the offer of a car wash doesn't come up. I don't know why. I just shrug and pump my gas. I'll get the wash next time around. I do know that when the car wash is not operating, the option does not come up on the pump. Could be that it was disabled and they forgot to enable it again.

Last one was done Sunday......39 cents a gallon after all the shenanigans

Interesting. Shell I went to, also in MA, has a $6 basic wash. You can make a $1 by washing your car Will try a different pump next week.

You guys beat me to it! I was going to tell everyone to take advantage of the free/cheap car wash. The basic wash at the Bradford (Haverhill) Shell is only $5 for a free wash/$2 gas discount combo. It's funny how it's different at other stations. This is my third S&S promo and it just dawned on me to ALWAYS get the car wash.

On another note, I went into the Chelmsford AND North Andover S&S during the promo. There were no variables in their regular spot. So I startling shuffling through the other gift cards on the rack and found some behind other cards. ^ Gotta hide it better than that! I have to admit I was selfish at first and literally took the cards from the store and brought them back when I needed to use them. I knew it was wrong/stealing but I felt I could have talked my way out of it. I have stopped doing that since the winter promotion.

BTW, the gas cans from the Home Depot are TERRIBLE! The gas will not come out of the nozzle. I returned it and looked at the reviews online and they were all negative.

Really? I work in Chelmsford and went to that S&S once last month to see if they had any $500 GCs and there was none. Should have looked better....

There were 2-3 behind the $25 VGCs. I went into that store the last day of the promotion on my way to work.

I had an odd experience today. I went to fill up and when I entered my SS card it said I only get a 10cents discount so I went inside to cashier and same thing. Then I filled up a little and put the pump back. Then I re entered my card and it gave me the full $2.20 discount. Does anyone know why this occurred? It could be that maybe I didn't catch something.

There have been occasional reports of this in the past. Seems that the station goes temporarily offline (though in one episode a few months ago, many stations were offline for several days). If you only see a 10 cent discount, just start the transaction over until you get the $2.20 discount. If you continue to only get 10 cents, then the station may be offline for an extended period, and you may just need to try another station or come back another day. I think that during the extended outage, some people called Giant/S&S CS, and were told that they could send their full-priced gas receipt and get a refund somehow (equivalent to the gas points discount), but I don't know the details.

This really stinks when you are filling up at a Shell station!

10 cents is 'courtesy discount' when system is down

so if it says 10 cents instead of 0 etc, its just down, not a problem

7/31-8/6 2x gas points on MasterCard gift cards. I have always done the Metabank Visa's. Are these pin enabled and available in the same denominations?
