A new thread was created for the new year in 2017. This is the old thread. For the 2017 on this topic, go here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1819562-cvs-master-thread-2017-a.html
CVS is cash only for all Incomm-related reloads and reloadable cards, including Vanilla Reloads and Serve swipe reloads. See memo to stores for complete list. Other cards at CVS can still be bought using credit, but YMMV depending on location, Manager, etc.
New limits rolling out starting 10/20:
Transactions with $300 or more of card face value require ID.
Limit $2000 of card face value per 24 hour rolling period.
Limit of 10 cards per 24 hours.
Cashback posted in 48 hours.
Cash Register Freezing
Multiple reports that the CVS cash register will freeze and lock after scanning the ID when purchasing multiple prepaid cards. Then the register's computer needs to be restarted. Some report that "swiping" the ID instead of "scanning" will avoid the issue.
Limit of 7 tenders (swipes) per transaction. This is most commonly run into when using low-value AGCs. After seven, the transaction must be complete, no cash (or any other payment method) will be accepted to pay the balance.

i have been seeing "serve" card lately in my CVS (cant find vanilla reload).
fee is much cheaper @ 2.95 but I am not clear if i can use the card without registering the card to amex.
I do have bluebird, so i dont want to cause problem, so I dont bother to try it.
anyone has try this?

VR not activating
I went to CVS around 12:30 Eastern time, tried to buy 2 VR's, credit card transaction went through, but VR's not activated. They had to refund credit card. Tried twice, same thing.
Is anyone else experiencing same thing.

1 Victor's next to me is strict 2 per transaction (with DL scan).
another Victor's is all about up to 10 with scan since I told them it now works.
the trick, of course, is to buy a few one-at-a-time on a few different cards first. Avoid the scan initially. Then you can buy up to 10 with the scan.
The only time I walked out of Victor's with 10 tubs of ice cream, I felt a little bit dirty. Like the cardinals already knew what I had just done.

Talked to the store manager of my go to ice cream parlor. He stated that they keep ordering beans, but none are in the warehouse. He mentioned that they are a hot selling item. I think they are just phasing some cards in and out. That's the only thing I can see here.

After a long dry period, my regular CVS restocked today with a massive shipment of new-style VR's. First I've seen of these kind -- they've got a bunch of extra logos on the front.

$1k at one CVS that had had them earlier this week today. $1k at a second CVS that didn't have any this weekend. Also picked up $500 initial load on a MVD at second store. They had $1k limit per transaction but no problem with multiple transactions.

Can you snap a pic, out of curiousity? The new ones I've seen (with the scratch gently diagonal cover on the pin) don't ook too much different than the old ones - they have a new PayPal logo and say "Load any amount from 20-500 to your prepaid card or online account" rather than "Load any amount from 20-500", but not a bunch of extra logos.

The "new-style" VRs aren't really new...just new to CVS. SlurpeeVille has had the new ones for a few months now, even though you can't buy them with CCs anymore.
As gofarhaveacigar mentions, they don't look that much different than the old ones. The scratch off portion and the wording on the front are a little different, and there's a lot more logos.
