FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: CWAL
A new thread was created for the new year in 2017. This is the old thread. For the 2017 on this topic, go here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1819562-cvs-master-thread-2017-a.html

CVS is cash only for all Incomm-related reloads and reloadable cards, including Vanilla Reloads and Serve swipe reloads. See memo to stores for complete list. Other cards at CVS can still be bought using credit, but YMMV depending on location, Manager, etc.

New limits rolling out starting 10/20:
Transactions with $300 or more of card face value require ID.
Limit $2000 of card face value per 24 hour rolling period.
Limit of 10 cards per 24 hours.
Cashback posted in 48 hours.

Cash Register Freezing
Multiple reports that the CVS cash register will freeze and lock after scanning the ID when purchasing multiple prepaid cards. Then the register's computer needs to be restarted. Some report that "swiping" the ID instead of "scanning" will avoid the issue.

Limit of 7 tenders (swipes) per transaction. This is most commonly run into when using low-value AGCs. After seven, the transaction must be complete, no cash (or any other payment method) will be accepted to pay the balance.

Not sure if it matters, the VR I got have a magnetic strip instead of barcode (the first time I got this kind), so I couldn't do self checkout.

Hopefully.

I wonder whether it is possible to buy VRs w/CVC gift cards.

There is a deal going on right now w/egifter offering $15 off CVS gift cards of $100 or more, among other gift cards. Facebook is required though.

Tried it once - registers are hard-coded against it.

At what point during checkout did cash only pop up? After 1 VR scanned, all VR scanned, after you slid your cc, etc.

After VR scannded, amount entered, and I wanted to pay, then the pop up showed up on the register's screen (he turned it to show me) saying cash only.

Yes, but someone needs to come to ring their card, twice per VR (once to confirm the amount, once to enter the last four digit of CC).

I'm in New York City and haven't been able to find any VRs at any CVS's in the last month or so. Incredibly disappointing. If someone could PM me any locations, I'd truly appreciate it.

I've tried a couple near my work in SoHo, and one near my home in Queens.

Yep, I can. Bunch of places in the midwest. So, to quote H. Greeley: "Go West, young man, Go West."

Sorry, i just couldn't resist that>

" Da Bride" hit 3 CVS in the area today, and came home with 3K VRs. Tomorrow is Oct 1. BB is open again, for business.

I was recently on Oahu and had no problem buying VR from any of the Long's Drugs in the area.

I have a trip to OGG next week, and was wondering if Longs will have VRs, AND with a CC?

Isn't that what happened with Office Depot? They took them off and only brought them back after the registers were hard coded?

Hmm..such a good reason for me to go to Hawaii.

"Honey, we'll be able to buy a lot of VRs over there.."

Well, you cannot be farther West than I am.

Technically you can, of course, but it will be rather East than West

This is programmed by Incomm by SKU. There are 2 kinds of magnetic stripe cards. One type you find in Walgreens and these are not triggered by Incomm as cash only - they are cash only due to Walgreen's POS. The other is like you find in 7-11 and these are triggered by incomm as cash only. Why they have so many variations of 1 product is beyond me.

Use your imagination as to how I can report this.
