A new thread was created for the new year in 2017. This is the old thread. For the 2017 on this topic, go here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1819562-cvs-master-thread-2017-a.html

CVS is cash only for all Incomm-related reloads and reloadable cards, including Vanilla Reloads and Serve swipe reloads. See memo to stores for complete list. Other cards at CVS can still be bought using credit, but YMMV depending on location, Manager, etc.

New limits rolling out starting 10/20:
Transactions with $300 or more of card face value require ID.
Limit $2000 of card face value per 24 hour rolling period.
Limit of 10 cards per 24 hours.
Cashback posted in 48 hours.

Cash Register Freezing
Multiple reports that the CVS cash register will freeze and lock after scanning the ID when purchasing multiple prepaid cards. Then the register's computer needs to be restarted. Some report that "swiping" the ID instead of "scanning" will avoid the issue.

Limit of 7 tenders (swipes) per transaction. This is most commonly run into when using low-value AGCs. After seven, the transaction must be complete, no cash (or any other payment method) will be accepted to pay the balance.

Definitely drying up across CVS's home state. Thankfully there are about 5 month's worth on the shelves.

You can load VRs online at $1000/day.
You can't or at best are limited to $100/day for GCs.
Big difference.

MOs are just the tools for the quicker liquidation.

Not if you load BB at a WM register...

I don't understand what you're saying.

Of course not.

Point is you can quickly load $1000VRs daily from the comfort of your home.

You can't at best to load the same amount from GCs from home.

Anyway, brothers and sisters, here is a $5 off $20 coupon. I am sure your CVS manager will be happy to see it. Ends tomorrow. YMMV. Says no gift cards or prepaid cards. But since you are at CVS, you might grab something else, not just VRs.

Plenty of supply around Sacramento. All the new style now with "scratch gently" printed in small diagonal stripes across the silver/green background - not the 7-11 style with the magnetic strip instead of a barcode.

Maybe certain areas that are know for heavy churning are being throttled back.
The idea of letting the well run dry before refilling it doesn't make much sense to me. If there were security issues with the old cards they would have hem pull them off the shelves. Otherwise you would just introduce the new cards and let the old ones get bought up.

I was thinking that is what they are doing in my area. Had new ones for weeks, then they all got bought. Now have old ones again with no new ones on rack so my impression is they are letting them run down to clean out the old ones from the warehouse and backrooms. Or maybe it is just happenstance. Several stores are out of VR but still have plenty of Visa $500 giftcards on the racks. In some stores Visa $500 have gone from stuffed racks to noticeably thinned out in the last month. But no shortage of Visa.

I was at my 'go to' CVS this morning, and they had a nice supply of VRs. They had both versions, the newer ones as well as the older ones. But the lime is 1K per day. She indicated that others have been buying these, but recently in varying odd amounts. I told her it is probably because of the DL issue, and that her machine is going to request to scan my DL. It did, she smiled, so I told her why. I'm not at all paranoid about having my DL scanned. It wouldn't surprise me if, at sometime in the future, CVS will scan every time a CC is used. To me, I say 'scan away." I wonder how many of the MS persons would stop buying VRs? My guess would be none to very few.
I went back this after noon b/f my drive back home, and the same clerk was at the register, so I didn't even try getting another 1K of VRs. But the beer was on sale.

Although there aren't plenty of stock like a few weeks ago, it's still a decent amount in the few stores I frequent on the north side of Chitown. Some have the cards on the check out counter instead of the GC rack.

in my favorite store today I was told "cash or debit only".
I said I bought beans w/CC many times here.
"oh, we have new manager and that's how he wants it".

In another store /new to me/ I found a lot of beans only to be told "cash only since last week".

Time for you to train the new manager.

It seems like a trend now.

I will try going there again on the different shift and see what happens.

It is about 40 miles roundtrip for me though.

At least I was able to get rid of 4x$500 CGCs there. I bought beans w/them.

All in all, I liquidated $10500 in CGCs today. Not bad.

Interesting experience today at one of my regular CVSs. A manager took over the register just before my turn which I never like, but oh well. I gave him two VRs and asked to load $500 on and $490 on the other. He paused for a good second, then said "sure" and rang up the transaction, no problems, the receipt printed and he handed it to me, then he quickly grabbed a second presumably duplicate receipt that printed immediately after and set it out of my sight beside the register. It would have been easy to miss and I had the distinct impression that I wasn't supposed to see it, and I suspect that it was for an SAR for structuring, if that word applies here.

I don't know how big a deal to make of it, but the moral of the story is: if you try to avoid the DL scan by going just under $1K, you may be triggering some alarm.

Why buy VR with GC? Just buy MOs. They're much cheaper. What am I missing?
