Strip clubs can just create a bunch of paper $1 vouchers.

That's what they did at the strip club I was at in Windsor and Toronto. They just sell these slips of papers for $2 for the strippers tips and they just turn them in at the end of the night. Of course they have no problems accepting American paper $ either

At extreme risk of veering this thread to OMNI and getting banned myself.......... er........um...........ask any of your military veteran buddies who were stationed in Asia back in the 80's or so about various other countries solution to the vexing local currency being coins/stripper issue.
The solution involved placing the coins on your beer bottle and then setting your beer bottle on the stage. The rest of the solution is not repeatable here but is quite amazing and would most definitely promote widespread acceptance of dollar coins by at least half the population.

I went to a strip club in Palm Beach, FL a couple of weeks ago where the strippers were dancing on an island bar and the punters had to screw up their dollar bills and throw them. Not even a little bit practical as the screwing reduces the useful life of the paper and they tended to fly of course into other customers' beers.
Much better in such circumstances to be able to throw dollar coins at the strippers. Better still "dollar jellies"

Growing up I remember we had collections of US dollar coins.. I understood it to be a rarity.. but I did not realize that the US stopped producing dollar coins..

Paper pennies!
So people feel like they need to value things down to $0.01 but there's no metal to make minting economical. So why not a paper 1-cent note? Hong Kong had it: http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%A6%...B4%99%E5%B9%A3

No - continuing to produce paper dollars is the real waste. The issue is getting the coins in circulation. The coinfolk were actually doing that vs. the current situation where the coins are rotting away right after minting. The problem is that the process had inefficiencies - the majority of the coins quickly ended up back at the Federal Reserve and costs - the mint was subsidizing shipping.
What the mint should have done was continue to accept credit cards, but shift the shipping cost to the coinfolk. The coinfolk would probably have paid up to $15 per $1,000 order, maybe even as high as $20. Then the mint should have reduced the coin mintage rate and dumped the paper dollar to increase demand for the coins.
Around the world coins are still being used. Plastic don't fit in donation boxes or collection plates and tossing dollar bills don't work in a toll basket. Festivals and events also consume coins as do vending machines.
Many have wondered if some in the mint actually set the circulating coin program up for failure. Remember, the "money casino" was always rigged - the special interests for the linen and paper in the bills owned a few key politicians and would never allow the dollar bill to be killed off. It is not beyond possibility that the circulating coins were killed off by someone with an agenda and that agenda most certainly was not to save the government money.

I would love to know how much spending of the coins is down now that the mint eliminated the direct ship program. Like everyone else on here, a lot of my coins did make it back to the bank. But a LOT of them also made it into ciriculation. With the exception of my church donations, my pet sitter and my cleaning lady, I used the coins for everything that I couldn't use a credit card for. I easilly spent $30K a year in those coins. Now I spend ZERO with the dollar coins
