Upgrading
 

Has anyone been upgraded on a MH flight despite not being an enrich member?

Do they ever upgrade oneworld alliances based on status?
I'm AB gold hoping to get an upgrade on my flight with them soon. However I'm thinking that's highly unlikely.

Never hope for an op-up from an airline as you'll be disappointed most of the time. Having that said, I was op-uped on a KUL-BKK flight before and was totally surprised when it happened. I was hoping for op-ups on full (probably oversold) KUL-MEL/PER/LHR flights and those didn't happened.

The problem is these days is that so many people have status and so upgrades are rare. Also in this case I think they would upgrade an Enrich member before someone with status on another airline.

It's entirely possible for non-Enrich elites to get upgraded.

But where did this hope of a free upgrade stem from?
Airlines in Asia do not have the habit of upgrading their elite customers just because ... very different situtation than that of the US airlines e.g. AA or UA and their SWU etc.
I'm not quite sure how that Works actually but luckily for us in (SE) Asia, we don't have to .. it just doesn't happen unless the flight is overbooked.

Not to go OT, but what determines whether an itinerary is eligible for upgrade? My PER-KUL/SGN-ADL one isn't ... (revenue booking - Q)

They are more likely to upgrade an enrich platinium/gold/silver member than they are someone without any status.

My friend was travelling DOH-DXB (Qatar Airways) then DXB-KUL (Malaysia). He is Qatar Airways Gold and was upgraded on the DXB-KUL portion, so it does happen!

Was it a MH aircraft? Or Qatar Airways aircraft?

AFAIK, Qatar doesn't fly DXB-KUL... :p

Sorry for the delayed response! His flight DOH-Dxb was on Qatar Airways metal while DXB-kUL was a Malaysia plane (the ticketing for the whole journey was done with Malaysia).
