MH had a total of 17 772s, including the two that were lost.

I thought they had 4 when they unfortunately lost the 2?

That was such a big reduction in their fleet size...especially wide body ones.

Thanks for this, very interesting and begs the question is MH even capable of running a long haul business? Seems to be a history of retiring long range aircraft and cancelling the routes.
Also some discussion here!

MH have maintained the international routes for decades as far as Frankfurt, Amsterdam and London and previously flew to LA as well. They only recently dropped Frankfurt and Amsterdam after the decision to retire the entire 777 fleet with immediate effect after the MH17 shoot down. The LA route was dropped some year's back with the retirement of the 747 fleet and also due to none profitability due to extreme competition.

Plans were in place to stand down the 777 fleet prior to that but it was in the discussion stage and discussions were being done at board room level as to what the best replacement would be when the 2 tragedies happened.

They added Cape Town and Bounes Aires as well but this didn't last more than 10 years due to the cost of operating the route and lack of profitability.

Other routes dropped due to non profit was Istanbul and at least one of the middle eastern routes (Dubai?).

The retirement of the 777 fleet severely hampered the ability to fly to more cities but it was done for a number of sensible reasons at the time and to stop the financial bleeding within the company.

They will bounce back with the 350's and additional wide body aircraft they plan on leasing in the coming 12 months for further expansion and a return potentially back to Frankfurt.

MH initially wanted to include PEY but presumably this has been scrapped and what remains is that these would be Y seats with extra legroom - similar to the mini Y cabin in the A330 just behind J cabin.
this is really sad for First Class. I hope they'll get doors or have at least much more seat pitch. Even Philippine Airlines has these in J now... Philippine Airlines!!!

They have actually been rather successful in the long haul business with the 777s and 747s in the last decade. Long term mismanagement and the twin incidents led to unsustainable load factors with the 777. Parking these older and less efficient 777s is probably cheaper than anything else at the moment.

Read that they are leasing these old 777-200s to Zimbabwean, while looking for newer and more efficient second hand 777s/330s for short term use. At the same time they are looking to get 30 brand new 787s or 330neos for the 2020s.

It should be an exciting few years ahead for MH, excited to see their a350 product, their next step will make or break the brand.

Have been told to expect news announcements from MH CEO on new leases for 330's soon and expansion of services for KUL-China routes and BKI-China routes for 2018/2019.

This could be ground breaking for MH.

MH desperately needs wide bodied aircraft for China, Taiwan and some Indian routes. So the 2nd hand A330s will be a welcome relief forthe workhorse 738 aircrafts currently being used for some of these routes.

Besides the private meeting with Mr Trump, Mr Najib is scheduled to meet Vice-President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defence Secretary James Mattis. He will also meet members of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee and witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Malaysian Airlines and Boeing Aircraft Corporation.

This might point towards an order for a good number of 787s by MH in the next few days?

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines will announce a deal to buy eight widebody Boeing 787 jets during the visit of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to the United States, two industry sources said on Tuesday.

The deal, worth more than US$1.8 billion at list prices, is expected to be one of the announcements that will be made after Najib meets with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, the sources said.

Najib is scheduled to witness a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony between Malaysia Airlines and Boeing, according to a schedule of the Prime Minister's events in Washington reported by Malaysian media outlets.

Malaysia Airlines said it would not comment on reports that are speculative in nature. The sources did not want to be named because the discussions were private.

The airline's chief executive said in June that it was in early negotiations with Airbus and Boeing for the purchase of 35-40 new long-range jets.

Aircraft manufacturers typically give discounts to list prices.

Boeing and Airbus declined to comment. - Reuters

8 jets is a very small number considering that they were talking about 35-40 new wide bodies. Not too sure how much political influence is there in this if this becomes reality, at least we are sure it will be a handful of the A330neos that will replace current A330-300s
