can you buy alcohol onboard?

If the fare is lower it makes sense they are giving you that option. I agree with baggage fees for that reason too.

Yes but it was not competitive like today's long-haul business.

It's still an budget airline let's not compare Aer Lingus with LH etc.

MH was kind of up there not where Aer Lingus was.

I flew HKT-KUL-HKT in J late-Jan and can confirm there was no alcohol loaded onto either flight. I've got a KUL-MNL-KUL coming up in J in the next few days so will report back then with alcohol situation and whether champagne was loaded.

...they HAVE have had a long-haul business class for many years & thats a fact - however one views it’s competitiveness.

that's not good.
Flew CGK-KUL-NRT in December and there was free flowing alcohol on both segment in J.
Food even after selecting Chef on call was sub par.
Definitely not on my list anymore with this new change for trans Asia travel.

Flew KUL-MAA rtn on Wednesday.
No alcohol for the mornng outbound (9:30am departure)
and only offered red wine (cheap merlot) on the night flight back (00:30 am departure)
Seems to fit into the whole new alcohol policy although MAA is 3h 20mins.

Apparently they do stock spirits on board but you have to request for it.

Even before this stupid no alocohol policy, they were already cutting on drinks in the last 2 years.
I was always agravated with MH loading only 1 bottle of Champagne on flights operated by the 737-800, even on longer flights like Mumbai. When lucky, they would have 2 bottles... Even so, it is not sufficient for a full cabin with 16 passengers, on a 4 hours flight.
I have complained multiple times and they always blamed "space restriction". Other airlines don't have any issue loading enough... Why would MH have less space? Clearly, this was already a cost cutting measure.
I have been Platinum with MH Enrich for 4 years now, but I have stopped flying with them. The declining level of service just makes it so annoying that I'd rather have a connecting flight via Singapore or Bangkok...

Sounds more and more like they may go completely dry. Whomever at Malaysian thought restricting alcohol was a good idea may want to rethink. Unless, that is, you want to be compared to the likes of Kuwait Airlines, Egypt Airlines, etc...

If you'd rather inconvenience yourself and face a possible missed connection by flying via BKK/SIN, just because you can't get alcohol on board, that says more about you than the airline

Since the fateful tragedies there have been vocal groups in Malaysia calling for a total ban of alcohol on all MH flight.

Even if they are cutting back for cost cutting measures they should do it in Y and not J. While we're on the subject, I seem to notice that they now even serve water out from those metal jugs. Even their sparkling Is down right nasty. ;(

It is not an inconvenience for me to take a connecting flight when I fly an airline that treats me as valued customer and offers great service and comfort...
On the contrary, it is an inconvenience to fly MH. It 's not just about the lack of alcohol onboard. It's about their complete lack of customer focus, "black hole" communication channels, dysfunctional processes & systems, and sub-standard product.

Enjoy MH! As for me, after 160 flights with them in 2015, I have made my decision to stop flying with them!

That's right. These days, it's tap water... They fill those metal jugs from the taps in the galley. Nasty taste!
In C, they still serve bottled water, but not in Y!
