MHUpgrade is MH's implementation of Plusgrade's bid on an upgrade platform.
  • You can check if your itinerary is eligible for bidding on an upgrade (most are) on MH's website here, but it typically takes 24-48 hours after the ticket is issued for the itinerary to be in Plusgrade's system
  • You cannot bid for flights departing within 72 hours
  • Minimum bids are dynamically set based on various factors, and don't appear to change as you get closer to flight departure
  • Tip: If you're bidding the minimum, you should consider making the bid in USD unless bidding in your home currency avoids credit card costs that are higher than the difference in pricing (see this post)
  • Bid amounts can be changed or withdrawn up to 72 hours from flight departure. It does not appear that you can update the credit card number
  • Accepted bids will be processed within the 72 hours window, generally prior to 48 hours to departure
  • If your bid is accepted:
    • The credit card will be charged
    • You will be rebooked in "I" class for business class, "P" class for first class
    • You will receive an email notification from Plusgrade
    • You will receive an email with your new eTicket from the airline
  • Within MH Enrich, mileage accrual is based on the fare class on your original ticket. For partner programs, without manual intervention, your mileage accrual is based on the class you've been rebooked into, not the one from your original ticket. Retro claims based on original booking may be required, it is unclear yet if they will be accepted or not.
    • Note that "I" earns nothing, including no segment credits or tier points (it's as if you never took the flight) on AA, BA, CX, and probably other carriers (check your program's information), so from a frequent flyer standpoint you might end up worse off
    • There are multiple reports from multiple users in this thread that mileage on partner programs (BA) will be credited based on the earning rates (if any) from original booking class, following manual intervention/claim.
  • Please read MH's FAQs

Thanks for the info everyone.

@dici we’ll be on a B738 to MNL. Flew in MH economy last year and found the leg room to be terrible. Luckily it was only a 40 minute hope up to LGK. 4 hours of that would be crippling. We current have exit row seats for a little extra room.

The business class product onboard the B738 would be a significant upgrade in comfort for me personally. If not tall, I totally agree with your sentiment though.

MH88/A380 KUL-NRT: $500 minimum, $535 offer accepted)
MH70/A350 KUL-NRT: $475 minimum (5% off automatic, limited-time promotion, $485 offer accepted)
MH89/A380 NRT-KUL: $535 offer, did not bid. Worth noting that companion inquired and was offered $385 upgrade at check-in. So the notion that check-in upgrades are constantly higher than bidupgrade may no longer be true.

Downside is that the Enrich 3x everything promotion didn't apply to our upgraded flights as the tickets were reissued. Probably going to be a huge battle to get this credited to avoid being shorted Platinum.

If your flight departs at night and arrive at early morning in the destination, sometimes the upgrade is worth because the sleeping quality in biz class if far superior than the economy. But it also depends on the overall flight hour and aircraft type.

I meant with some reading up on the premium fares forum you could pay lot less than this for a J experience and earn full points.

Sometimes due to the reason that your (or partner's) time is not flexible to wait for premium fare sales, therefore you had to plan and buy the air ticket ahead when you can go for vacation. Especially for some job, you have a very limited time period that you could take a vacation. So, this is when someone would consider pay for upgrade instead of waiting for any premium fare sales

Some other time is due to company policy where you are only allow to take certain travel class when the air fare is paid by company. Definitely you can fork your own money to get a upgrade

Don't waste time Mhupgrade

Don't waste your time to go for Mhupgrade. The people in charge of this department are not interested to sell additional business class tickets to make profit for the airline. They rather leave the seats empty. This is the attitude problems of the MAS staff in office. The cabin crews are doing a great job but the office staff is just couldn't careless about the survival of the airline. The office staff must be revamped and those found not doing their work, like the marketing dept and this MHupgrade must be told to leave! If better and more responsible persons are enployed to man these dept, there is slight hope of MAS been able to survive, otherwise, the govt should shut it down!!

Previous posts stated that KUL-HKG upgrades can be had for around RM 480+. Not anymore... the bid starts at RM700.

No thanks.
450 for my flight. On the 380 though ... hmm. Still, seems like a LOT, especially considering flight is F8.

For a 3-4 hour flight definitely not worth it. To me, the main benefit of the upgrade is to get a good rest, which only applicable if your flight time is a minimum of 5 hours, and chilling at the golden lounge if you have a long transit time. But then the lounge feels so boring after a while.

Well... NRT-KUL is 7.x and it comes with a free keychain!...

Though I wonder - if one doesn’t have Emerald, does it give access to the JL F lounge in Narita?

I would assume yes.

A Business Suite boarding pass in itself doesn’t grant you partner F lounge access, because it’s technically “Business”.

Data point:

KUL-HKT

Upgrade from 225 ringgit and up.

My bid: 250 MYR
Status: Accepted

Base fare: 230 MYR (inclusive of taxes/fees)

Not too shabby given that the cheapest discount J fare was MYR 700 on my date.

Sorry for the confusion, these prices were for Business->Business Suite. Worth mentioning there's a new promo going on for check-in counter upgrades:

LAST MINUTE UPGRADES Travel in style and luxury with an upgrade from Business Class to Business Suite on your redemption ticket. From now until 30 June 2019, last minute upgrades can be purchased with 10% discount, 3 hours before your flight departure at the check-in counter.

If they're still offering the same prices, the discounted price of $345 for a Business Suite upgrade out of NRT is pretty solid. However, the check-in agents mentioned that they might not end up loading all Business Suite items (caviar, PJs, amenity, etc.) for last minute upgrades.
