MHUpgrade is MH's implementation of Plusgrade's bid on an upgrade platform.
  • You can check if your itinerary is eligible for bidding on an upgrade (most are) on MH's website here, but it typically takes 24-48 hours after the ticket is issued for the itinerary to be in Plusgrade's system
  • You cannot bid for flights departing within 72 hours
  • Minimum bids are dynamically set based on various factors, and don't appear to change as you get closer to flight departure
  • Tip: If you're bidding the minimum, you should consider making the bid in USD unless bidding in your home currency avoids credit card costs that are higher than the difference in pricing (see this post)
  • Bid amounts can be changed or withdrawn up to 72 hours from flight departure. It does not appear that you can update the credit card number
  • Accepted bids will be processed within the 72 hours window, generally prior to 48 hours to departure
  • If your bid is accepted:
    • The credit card will be charged
    • You will be rebooked in "I" class for business class, "P" class for first class
    • You will receive an email notification from Plusgrade
    • You will receive an email with your new eTicket from the airline
  • Within MH Enrich, mileage accrual is based on the fare class on your original ticket. For partner programs, without manual intervention, your mileage accrual is based on the class you've been rebooked into, not the one from your original ticket. Retro claims based on original booking may be required, it is unclear yet if they will be accepted or not.
    • Note that "I" earns nothing, including no segment credits or tier points (it's as if you never took the flight) on AA, BA, CX, and probably other carriers (check your program's information), so from a frequent flyer standpoint you might end up worse off
    • There are multiple reports from multiple users in this thread that mileage on partner programs (BA) will be credited based on the earning rates (if any) from original booking class, following manual intervention/claim.
  • Please read MH's FAQs

Couldn't find anything on this so here goes. If I make an award redemption via BA for an MH flight, am I still able to bid for an upgrade? Or is it just for paid tickets only?

Bid upgrade is only for paid tickets.

Any idea what these "ineligible fare classes" might be? I've just booked HKG-KUL-PEN with a "Q" fare basis (though the domestic sector booked into "L"). Flight from HKG is on the A330, so would be cool to upgrade if possible,

[By the way: do they always serve the Satay on HKG-KUL like they would on a proper longhaul flight? It's been a while since I flew MH - can'r remember the short-haul catering scheme]

It can be quite random at times. Even the lowest cash fares can be eligible, but sometimes they're not. Similarly, some travel agent bookings seem to be eligible, while others aren't. I haven't found a proper explanation for this.

If you're on an one of those afternoon/evening flights, then yes.

HKG-KUL isn't exactly short haul. Not as far as catering is concerned, at least.

Thanks for the feeback.

Quick update: seems my flight now is eligible to bid for an upgrade, but the minimum prices add up to about what I paid for the ticket in the first place!

To wit:

HKG-KUL - minimum price = 1240 HKD
KUL-PEN - minimum price = 350 HKD

Would only be interested in the HKG-KUL sector, but accepted bids mentioned in the Wiki here are for just over 800 HKD, so 50% less than the minimum bids that I've been offered. [Maybe it's because this particular flight is operated by the A330, and has a nicer hard-product?]

Anyway - will check back closer to departure to see if the minimum price hasn't decreased.

The satay is nice... but something considerably nicer can obviously be found in Penang.

Minimum bidding prices are really crazy now if you compare with previous accepted bids. It's not even worth making an offer. As commented above, you can get better food and hotel for that amount.

Successful bid and upgrade over the past week.

KUL-HYD
HYD-KUL

Both min bid @ SGD $175.. I bid SGD $180 each and got it.

In both cases, biz class was 50% full and I had the seat beside me free.

Am flying MH NRT-KUL (A380) in Business booked into Z class (so technically ineligible for upgrade??)
Chances of being able to upgrade using cash? If so, likely price point? Thx.

You should be able to bid for an upgrade with a Z class ticket - I was given the opportunity on my Z class booking KUL/LHR recently though didn't end up making a bid.. Have you tried on the MH website?

Mmmmmm......."Your itinerary may not be eligible for an upgrade.

Please ensure to use your 6 character booking reference”....

I did use the correct PNR. Perhaps affected by an earlier sector booked on a MH/JL code share?? Any thoughts?

Possibly ... Was the ticket issued by MH? If so, the ticket number should begin 232.
How did you purchase it? Others have reported that you can't bid for an upgrade if it was bought through a (O)TA, but that doesn't appear to be the case all the time.
When did you book it? It can take a few days before the booking is eligible for an upgrade ... or so it seems to me.
I would suggest ringing MH.

Airport Upgrade

Apologies if there is another thread on this! Looking for info on upgrading at KUL to Buiss class for our flight to SIN! As I booked with BA my flight is not eligible for upgrade on MH website! I will be arriving into KUL from BKK the night beforehand, would they upgrade if availability then? Also has anyone upgraded from economy to Buisness on a Avios reward ticket before ? Thanks in advance for any info
