Have there been reports anywhere as to how large of a search effort might be underway radiating out from Reunion, and its progress, if any? And anything about "reverse modeling" underway - beyond what we've already seen w/r/t typical Indian Ocean currents? OK, this still may be cart before horse (to ask here) as there hasn't been official confirmation of the flaperon's provenance from the French. But both activities would be timely.
ETA: Thank you, Esher.

Deliberate action, absolutely. If there is a fire onboard the aircraft (which I think most likely happened to MH370), you want the pilots to take deliberate action - turn the plane towards the nearest suitable airport and land ASAP. In MH370, the pilots believed turning back to Malaysia was the best option, which would explain the sharp turnaround after the sign off from Malaysian ATC.

Well, there's speculation, and then there's speculation.
Concocting a scenario where there's just enough fire to incapacitate both pilots (and of course for this to work, neither would have followed protocol and put on their masks) but the plane keeps flying level and straight comes dangerously close to Lost-type speculation, or aliens lasering the plane or some such, IMO.

The Malaysian Insider: Experts say sonar ‘debris’ images should be reexamined in search for MH370 (Published: 20 October 2015 3:54 PM)
A short excerpt:
US firm Williamson & Associates said images of the southern Indian Ocean floor released by the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau (ATSB) this month bore a striking similarity to the underwater debris field Air France Flight 447 left on the Atlantic Ocean floor when it crashed in 2009, killing all 228 passengers and crew.
The ATSB provided the images of the two sites as part of an update in which it also said a re-scan of the areas indicated they were not related to MH370.
Experts involved in past deep-water searches have said the hunt could easily miss the plane because Dutch company Fugro NV was using inappropriate technology and inexperienced personnel for the highly specialised task.
Williamson and Associates "believes the target (sonar image) bears the hallmarks of a classic high-impact debris trail similar to other wrecks it has located", it said in a research paper obtained by Reuters.

China has agreed to increase its contribution to the search effort by 20M Australian dollars.
Supposedly, the Fugro ship will move into an area that a British pilot-Simon Hardy-claims contains the aircraft's wreckage.

The Australian search coordination agency released an update today:

They anticipate the sweep of the current search area will be completed by mid-next year.

Today I read this new in Yahoo from AP
http://news.yahoo.com/large-metal-ch...101516863.html
But could this be from the Air Asia incident as well?

I'm sure its one of those things when charting unknown areas, but the loss of one of the sonar arrays didn't fill me with hope for a useful outcome:
