New Amanresorts, "Zecharesorts", GHM and Ahn Luh Resorts (2016 edition)

Founded by Adrian Zecha, Amanresorts, GHM and probably the upcoming Ahn Luh Group are the benchmark of luxury hotels and resorts.

Since Aman, GHM and Zecha are very active in developing new fantastic landmarks, speculation about upcoming resorts is very popular.

So please snap the rumors and report them here! This thread continues the discussions of the respective 2009/10/11/12/13/14/15-threads - and on this threadstarter, every news and rumor is collected, trying to keep the list constantly up-to-date!

***After new management took over Amanresorts from Zecha, the wise old founder is planning new resorts with a new company, for which my working title is "Zecharesorts". ***

For discussions about existing Amanresorts/GHMs please use the "Amanresorts Thread"

NEW AZERAI-HOTELS and other ZECHAPROJECTS

- Azerai Luang Prabang, Laos. Opening postponed to softopening December 2016, managed by Ex-Amantaka GM Gary Tyson. Backtobasics-concept with personalized luxury, but with substantally smaller rooms and lower prices than Amanresorts. 56 rooms in old Phousi Hotel, renovated by Amantaka architect Pascal Trahan.

- Luxury Club in Miami. Zecha is developing for a real estate tycoon, restaurant-and-spa-focussed

- Rumors about more Zecharesorts floating around, for example in South America

NEW AMANRESORTS - WITH PHYSICAL EVIDENCE:

- Aman Shanghai: Located 30km outside Shanghai, it will be set on 100 acres of land overlooking ornamental lakes and gardens and will include 24 suites, along with 26 villas. First source was an interview with Aman CEO Jolivet, found by Kage here: https://www.ttgmedia.com/luxury/luxu...n-in-asia-2011, where Jolivet puts the timestamp "not before end of 2017" on it, now announced at Aman event.

AMAN - SOUNDS REAL:

- Aman in Portugal in Aljento Region, "could join soon" according to Jolivet

6 (!) Amanresorts in Gabon, West Africa:
- A resort with 20 luxury tents to the south of the Loango National Park
- A hotel with 30 villas on the Phare de Ngombe site in the Pongara National Park just outside of Libreville
- A hotel with 30 suites in Libreville
- A hotel with 30 suites in the Lop National Park
- A hotel with 30 villas on the Kongou Falls site in the Ivindo National Park and a resort with 10 tents on the Langou site in the same park
- A resort with 15 tents in the Batk Plateaux National Park
First spotted by Gallivanter's Guide and paul2, now offical reports of the signing ceremony: http://www.en.legabon.org/news/807/a...-tourism-gabon. But only "still on the drawing board" according to Jolivet

AMAN - SPECULATIVE/VAPORWARE

4+ new Amanresorts in India, according to The Hindu Times (spotted by Gallivanters here http://www.thehindu.com/business/Ind...e8991259.ece):
- New Delhi
- Mumbai are definitely our target cities for setting up new properties as well as
- Rajasthan will have one more resort
- Chennai
- Bengaluru
- north east of Kolkata

- Aman in Seoul, Korea, mentioned by seiknujnama and by Gallivanter's

- Amankea (http://www.dolphinci.com/#kea-resort) on spectacular Kea Island in Greece, 60 kilometers southeast of Athens - designed by FS-Sayan-Spaceship-Architect John Heah, found first by Ericka. It received approvals, "Completion of these loan facilities is targeted for the first quarter of 2015" according to it's investor Dolphin Capital.

- Amanoca close to Angra dos Reis, 2,5 hours from Rio de Janeiro. JM Gathy from Denniston will be designing. Only 20 room resort plus private villas for sale, on 70 acres of land including beach and marina. http://www.atlasholdingsintl.com/pro...zil/brazil.php
First spotted by Air Junkie. Opening postponed from late 2013 according to GK1998.

- Amanbadu in Dibeen, Jordan, which is close to Jerash, "an amazing Roman city" according to vuittonsofstyle, opening in "an ecologically sensitive forested site", managed by John Vasatka & Tania Rydon who already left Amanyara for it, according to paul2. Then rumored to be delayed due to problems, now back on track with Ian White as opening GM according to Gallivanter's 2014 rumoring. Some design draft spotted by Kage in Kerry Hill Book: http://ww3.sinaimg.cn/large/64943757jw1e2xka0uqhdj.jpg On hold because of war in nearby countries.

- Aman at Wadi Rum Desert, Jordan.

- Amanresorts in Mexico, Costa Rica and on “another Caribbean island” could be on the cards, according to CEO Jolivet found also here by Kage https://www.ttgmedia.com/luxury/luxu...n-in-asia-2011

- Aman London, early planning, no site yet according to GK1998, mentioned again by FT in 2015 in Doronins urban-resort-context

- Aman New York, early planning, no site yet according to GK1998, mentioned again by FT in 2015 in Doronins urban-resort-context

- Aman Paris, as mentioned on Aman investor Doronins website for a short time (and then quoted by Bloomberg here http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-1...lder-spat.html)

- Aman Singapore, as mentioned on Doronins website

- Aman Hong Kong, as mentioned on Doronins website

2 to 3 more Amanresorts in Japan:
- Amaniwa in Kyoto, about 1 km from the Golden Temple of Kinkakuji - seemed to be cancelled, but 5khours wrote here, that it is back on track, and Jolivet also mentioned it
- Aman in Ise, according to 5khours (maybe the same as Amanshima above?)
- Aman in the japanese Ski Region of Niseko, according to Gallivanters tweet.

Amanduna in Comporta, Portugal (a natural reserve 1 hour from Lisboa), opening was hoped for 2014/2015 (Gallivanters), but now delayed because of ownership/funding trouble "for a long time" according to 4 your eyes only. Sadly no ocean views. Next to Park Hyatt etc.: http://alcacergolf.com/Location/StrategicContext/ and http://herdadedacomporta.pt/fotos/ed..._dunes-eng.pdf

- A project combining a tented camp in the Galapagos with a hotel in Ecuadors Quito would also be desirable, according to Jolivet Interview

- Aman Rwanda, as found by Ericka and by Gallivanters Twitter: http://www.rwandaeye.com/news/3050/a...-rwanda-market Hopefully this Aman will never become reality, since Ruanda is anti-democratic and puts people in jail for their sexual orientations.

- "Several" new Amanresorts in Sri Lanka, including Colombo and Anuradhapura.

2 Amanresorts in Morocco:
- Aman in Essaouira - Gallivanter was twittering about Aman buying a Riad & connecting house in the costal town of Essaouira - and yes, they have! But did not start working on it. Sadly - because in combination with Amanjena it would be great having an Aman Beach Resort here!
- Aman in the Morocco's Mountains - Gallivanter is reporting, that they are also looking for a property in the mountains, which would als make much sense regarding the boring location of Amanjena.

2 more Amanresorts in China:
- Aman in Diqin area northwest of Zhongdian, Yunnan Province, China, according to seiknujnama already started construction opening in 2015
- Aman in Dali, also Yunnan Province in Burma direction - a city, famous for marble and a huge lake. First mentonied by Gallivanter's Guide.

You Tube

The building is at the opposite end of the town from the ocean, abutting the woods." Also mentioned by Zecha in http://goo.gl/qyx1U.

- Aman Gcek, Turkey (Architect Kerry Hill), rumored to me by an Aman manager, first specified by paul2.

- Amanseramai in Loreto, Mexico.

- Amanmara in Kenya, spotted by Paul2.

- Amanresort at Sukarta, one good hour from Yogyakarta and a little more from Amanjiwo. According to user Sundarma, construction should have begun in spring 2010, so an opening should have been expected around 2013...

I recall Aman London was mentioned in a Financial Times article in an interview. Aman Tokyo is actually pretty reasonably priced, but then this is London, so maybe only 1k/n and 500 for breakfast, plus extra charges for using the lights, flushing the toilet and opening the door? If it does happen, I wonder what will happen to the Aman spa at The Connaught.

As many others in the SPECULATIVE/VAPORWARE-category, Aman London was just a very vague rumor some years ago. There is absolutely no hint that this is in actual development stage. I would really love to see one Aman-Tokyo-style Aman London - but I do not expect it in the foreseeable future...

I've found the article where it states London, but is not a quote, so not sure where they're basing the information from:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/2138c5c0-9...#axzz3wTia5VuR

For though Doronin has a reputation as a forthright businessman, a spokesperson says that he bought the company because he loved the product. As he declares on his personal website (he declined to speak to me), he is a self-obsessed [sic] Amanjunkie [and has] been a loyal client for over 20 years. Whenever I am travelling, I like to stay in an Aman. The quality of service is amazing, with the ratio of staff to guests sometimes up to seven staff to one guest. It makes you feel at home. But unsurprisingly he is committed to expanding the brand, to what he calls its urbanisation, and has plans for Amans in London (where theres already an Aman-branded spa at the Connaught), New York, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Great, thank you - I now included the FT/Doronin-context in the threadstarter!

I was in Amangalla this past week and while on our fort tour our butler pointed out a building a block down that Zecha owns. It certainly looked large enough to building a boutique hotel in.

yes doronin and jolivet mentioned many, like zecha has in past
in one article jolivet clarified how few proposals actually open

uclabruin82, zecha or [now] doronin via silverlink/amanresorts?
seems like zecha did buy fair amount through silverlink/amanresorts
but i do not doubt that zecha does personally own a bunch as well

i hope zecharesorts ownership is like GHM, whatever GHM ownership is

BTG is investor in ahn luh and some of the amans in china
amanat claims BTG now own some of his shares in amanresorts

85 room new bvlgari with pool/spa isnt that expensive

Kage,
I did not question our butler on the tour about it, but based on what he said, it was Zecha. I am not sure how much he knows about the legal/corporate particulars...

I know you already mentioned it under cancelled, but I thought this was interesting:

Originally set to be an AmanResorts property, Walker rescued the project as it lay undeveloped as a result of the financial crisis.

“The banks pulled the plug on the finance and it sat there for eight years,” said Walker.
Ex-Laucala and Aman GM, Andrew Thompson, is now the GM. It will be interesting to see what could have been when it opens later this year.

If nothing else, we already know its theme song likely will be "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys.

Will be interesting to see what is going to happen. Legian will become independant and Chedi Andermatt is also no longer part of GHM as was recently announced in the Swiss press.

The Swiss article (in German) can be found here:

http://www.bilanz.ch/unternehmen/saw...-selbst-539265

It not only states that Chedi Andermatt will no longer be GHM, but that GHM will cease to manage hotels altogether and concentrate on franchising only.

Bilanz is a quite reputable journal, so I don't think they are just making this up. Haven't seen it before.

What's going on with GHM?

Anyone see the tweets from Gallivanters?

Andermatt is now solo...

Legian will no longer be GHM...

Hopefully the Legian will still be the terrific hotel that we stayed in July 2014.
