The 2013 New Amanresorts, GHM & Ahn Luh Development Thread

Amanresorts and any other hotels around the legacy of Adrian Zecha are the benchmark of luxury as discussed in the Luxury Hotels forum. So one of the most interesting themes here is speculating about upcoming Amanresorts, GHM Hotels and Resorts of the new Ahn Luh brand. Please snap the rumors and report them here! This thread continues the discussions of the respective 2009/10/11/12-threads - and on this threadstarter, I collect every news and rumor, keeping the list constantly up-to-date.

***For discussions about existing Amanresorts please use the http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/luxur...junkie.html***

NEW AMANRESORTS - WITH PHYSICAL EVIDENCE:

- Amanoi in Vietnam, near Nha Trang (one hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City), opening September 2013. Hugely pooled Pool Pavillions! Found first by Hubertus on architects website. Now Aman website open with loads of pics: www.amanresorts.com/amanoi/home.aspx.

- Amandayan in Lijiang, north western Yunnan Province, according to amanforever starting construction mid 2010, also quoted on Forbes (found by travel4vitality): http://onforb.es/m7WoLz. Lijiangs Old Town is Unesco World Heritage, with the largest number of timber houses still in their original Naxi village setting. Opening postponed to mid-2014 according to seiknujnama. See mock-up and panorama-pictures on page 3 of this thread, and see first real photos on page 22.

- Aman Tokyo in Otemachi district, scheduled for 2014 according to vuittonsofstyle. paul2 found the following Bloomberg-quote: "Slated for completion in 2014, the building will be located on the headquarters site of the former Fuji Bank. It will feature six below-ground and 38 above-ground floors."

- Amanoca close to Angra dos Reis, 2,5 hours from Rio de Janeiro. JM Gathy from Denniston will be designing. Only 20 room resort plus private villas for sale, on 70 acres of land including beach and marina. http://www.atlasholdingsintl.com/projects/brazil.php
First spotted by Air Junkie. Opening late 2013/early 2014 according to GK1998. Cheesy non-Aman website: http://amanoca.com/

- Amanduna in Comporta, Portugal (a natural reserve 1 hour from Lisboa), opening possibly in 2013. Sadly no ocean views. Next to Park Hyatt etc.: http://alcacergolf.com/Location/StrategicContext/ and http://www.herdadedacomporta.pt/en/tourism/amanduna/.

- Aman on Playa Grande, Dominican Republic, a Golf Resort designed by John Heah, 40 rooms, 40 http://www.pgresorts.com/#/AMAN RESO...AS/Aman Villas, Masterplan: (http://www.playagrande.com/page/the-...tel#masterplan. Most likely a 200-room-GHM Golf Hotel nearby (see below). Zecha broke ground with officials in March 2013: http://www.noticiassin.com/2013/03/p...-playa-grande/

AMAN - SOUNDS REAL:

- Aman in Cavtat, Croatia near Dubrovnik (and not far from Montenegro), hinted by Vuittons and Nama, found at http://www.bjelasica-komovi.com/file...consulting.pdf, now beginning to build http://www.justdubrovnik.com/2013/06...brovnik/11711/

- A hotel with 30 suites in Libreville

- Aman Napa Valley, as rumored by ngfan

- Aman Rwanda, as found by Ericka and by Gallivanters Twitter: http://www.rwandaeye.com/news/3050/a...-rwanda-market Hopefully this Aman will never become reality, since Ruanda is anti-democratic and puts people in jail for their sexual orientations.

- "Several" new Amanresorts in Sri Lanka, including Colombo and Anuradhapura: http://www.news.lk/news/business/326...s-in-sri-lanka.

- Amankea (http://www.dolphinci.com/#kea-resort) on spectacular Kea Island in Greece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kea_(island)) 60 kilometers southeast of Athens - designed by FS-Sayan-Spaceship-Architect John Heah, found first by Ericka. 2 Amanresorts in Morocco:
- Aman in Essaouira - Gallivanter is twittering about Aman buying a Riad & connecting house in the costal town of Essaouira. Very good - since it would be great having an Aman Beach Resort connecting with Amanjena in Marrakech.
- Aman in the Morocco's Mountains - Gallivanter is reporting, that they are also looking for a property in the mountains.

2 more Amanresorts in China:
- Aman in Diqin area northwest of Zhongdian, Yunnan Province, China, according to seiknujnama already started construction opening in 2015 (http://www.businesswire.com/news/hom...-Kipling-Clark) (both places not too far from each other)

- Aman at Pantanal (first mentioned by paul2). Status: Pre-development.

2 Amanresorts in Australia:
- Aman in Perth, Western Australia. Aman is "in talks" to convert The Old Treasury Buildings, a heritage site, and add a slim tower to the back of the building - to get an Aman Hotel with 90 rooms. 3 potential Amanresorts in Malaysia:
- Amancrag atop of Penang Hill (800 meters) at Penang Island, Malaysia. Spotted first by south_sea99, it will be the conversion of an old colonial hotel into a 20 villa Amanresort, most likely with quite spectacular bungalow design. See http://my.news.yahoo.com/crag-hotel-...072735999.html and at the end of this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=BE&f...&v=T5ArDgHsRbk. Planned opening in 2014, now some bureaucratic problems...

The building is at the opposite end of the town from the ocean, abutting the woods." Also mentioned by Zecha in http://goo.gl/qyx1U.

- Aman development in Burma, as reported by Andrew Harper.

- "Aman in Douro Valley" (UNESCO world heritage site, famous for its wine), architect JM Gathy according to GG, but according to vuittonsofstyle Aman pulled out. According to Gallivanter's Guide, there could be another one in Porto by architect Kerry Hill, but this was not confirmed by my Aman-source.

- Aman in Mozambique, East Africa, happening according to Gallivanter's twittering.

- Aman in Tanzania, East Africa, according to kalihikai.

- Aman in South Africa, first called by vuittonsofstyle. kalihikai added, that Aman already bought land and startet development.

- Amanmara in Kenya, spotted by Paul2: "If you try to open www.amanmara.com you are brought straight to the main amanresorts website.

- Amanresort at Sukarta, one good hour from Yogyakarta and a little more from Amanjiwo. According to user Sundarma, construction should have begun in spring 2010, so an opening could be expected around 2012 - which seems unlikely to me...

- Amancaya in Norman's Cay, Carribean, "finally got permissions" according to AirJunkie and opxzaw on flyertalk. http://www.bhahotels.com/news-update...resort-project I also found a funny government-permission link including financial details: http://www.thebahamasweekly.com/publ...aham2657.shtml

- Aman in Vancouver, as rumored by Gallivanter's Twittering.

- Dubai Aman near the Airport - "a unique lifestyle resort at DWTC's Dubai Trade Centre District" (http://propdubai.com/news/1091/index.php). Sounds disgusting!

- Aman Palau:
. maybe on the site of a former Nikko Hotel on one of the 250 Palau Islets, 500 miles southeast from the Philippines, opening unknown. According to a finding by Kage, "the project which will begin construction in the second quarter of 2009 will see completion in 14 to 16-month time", which it didn't.
. maybe on Kayangel Island, also in Palau, opening unknown
(First Source for both projects: Gallivanter Guide).

- Orissa, reported in 2008 (http://articles.economictimes.indiat...k-7-star-hotel)
- Kerala, reported in 2004 (http://articles.economictimes.indiat...cha-aman-group)

- Aman in Hawaii - paul2 rumors, that ex-Amanusa-GM Monty Brown is developing something there... Interestingly, vincentb89 found recently, that the pointable map on www.amanresorts.com shows a point in Hawaii! But vuittons now said, that Monty retired, so most probably there will only be a GHM in Hawaii.

Thanks for starting the new thread; a quick read through leaves me more than a bit concerned about Aman over-expansion.

I realize many of those locations are rumored and far from certain, but that's ~52 new Amans!

AMAN in GREECE

Originally, Amanmila - Greek Island Aman designed by John Heah and partially invested by his family - had development problems & ecoloogical problems given previous usage by mining & military. Project was taken over by Soneva.

Heah found a much better site on the island of Kea and 30% or so of the development money was found, also invested by Heah's family. Dolphin Capital are also behind this (Amanzo'e). Dolphin are currently concentrating on the Dominica project, but Amankea is still set to go ahead, but probably not until Dominica is well underway. Also, Greek economy impacted on sale of villas at Kea, which were going to help fund the project.

AMAN VENICE

There are two large gardens here (one on the edge of Grand Canal), so not as small as suggested. Livio Ranza is Hotel Manager under Olivia Richli.

Don't be afraid: Just don't count the "speculative/vaporware"-section - so at the end, there will be only up to 10 real Amans opening in the next 4 years, which seems managable to me...

A good way to look at Aman's wish list is to check out the registered domain names - http://www.webboar.com/ip/202.73.53.11/

Notice the one in New York?

I have heard a few different names of the GM in Aman Lijiang. I guess Vaipanya Kongkwanyuen should be the pre -opening GM now.

I am just back from Venice and guess where my curiosity drove me to.
First, two gardens - one on the water and the other (very private and surrounded by old brick walls) on the back - is a feature which is exceptionally rare, even unique for this (fantastic) stretch of the Grand Canal.
Note that other resort-like properties in Venice are located on other islands in the lagoon (e.g. Cipriani or the San Clemente (the latter now closed)) nice views but not in the middle of the action and connected via boats.
So the Aman will be basically in an "urban" setting which, in my opinion is great because it is at a walking distance from many many attractions in Venice.
It is true that it is not far from the touristy Rialto Bridge, but in Venice if you skip the itinerary marked by the yellow signed (packed with hordes of tourists, souvenir shops and horrific restaurants with plastic menues) there are hundreds of peaceful and magical calli and campi (streets and squares). Campo san Polo is the closest square which is usually busy with locals.
In short, the property is amazing (grandioso!!) and so it is its location, very quiet on the back and with a jaw dropping view on the Grand Canal on the front (Rialto on the left, gorgeous Palazzo Grimani in the front and the Ca Foscari bow of the canal on the right).
It's too bad I am not working on this project!
For any question feel free to pvt me. (Note that I do NOT know anything which is not already in the public domain!).
I should be back early in March for another weekend and can't wait to see how works are progressing.
Ciao!

See! I told you all it was a great site with two amazing gardens! I know they're not building a pool, but then this is Venice and the location is wonderful as are all Adrian's choices. So glad you agree!!

I agree that an outdoor swimming pool will be out question (that kind of property will be subect to a number of historical and landscape encumbrances and I am pretty sure that the zoning plan of Venice prohibits the construction of pools in such area) but spending the time by a pool in Venice sounds like a huge waste of time..
