Dorado Beach Hotel (Puerto Rico) Reopened as a Ritz-Carlton

It’s official. The famous Ritz-Carlton brand is coming to what used to be the Hyatt Dorado Beach Hotel.

The development of the five-star hotel is first in line for Caribbean Property Group (CPG)—owner of the Isla Verde Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Casino—and local developers Prisa Group, Dorado Mayor Carlos López confirmed to CARIBBEAN BUSINESS.

Before Hyatt ran it it was first an original RockResort and then Regent managed it for a while.

Opens in about two years.

I remember staying there back in the late 1980's, when it and the nearby Cerromar Beach hotel were run by Hyatt. How long did Hyatt operate the hotel, and what happened after that? I went looking for it for a colleague recently and couldn't find any info.

They are starting to knock down the rooms of the old Hyatt Dorado Beach.

The rooms will still be located in different buildings along the beach.

The rooms on the lower floor will each have its own plunge pool.
The rooms on the second floor will have an extended balcony.

At least three years away from checking in the first guest.

SuCasa is getting a paint job......

July 2010 Update from CPG group......developers of the resort

last week developer closed on the construction financing for the reconstruction of Dorado Beach Resort. This allows them to continue the current work and complete the new Ritz-Carlton Reserve resort and new Beach Club, both opening in December 2012. The funds will also be used to complete the Plantation Fitness Center this year, and the East Course renovation by 2011.

Nice to read about this as we liked the property (with mature vegetation) and the golf courses. East course is beautiful and challenging.

Construction on the resort continues and opening still scheduled late, late this year in December. (Think February 2013 ?????)

East golf course was renovated and is now open for play.
West course getting redo now.

Temporary website up: doradobeach.com

Last summer they offered a free App (electronic brochure)
through I-Tunes for the I-Pad search "Dorado Beach"

Sucasa which will will be a VIP Suite (complete with huge new pool) is now furnished. Guessing it will also be available for small weddings.

Oceanfront condos on the left side of the property.

Resort rooms steps from the beach (just like before) on the right.

Spanish chef Jose Andres will open the signature restaurant.

Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ambassadors of the Environment (as seen at other Ritz's including Kapalua) will be also featured.

Jose is a good chef and good restaurants, but the celebrity chef hotel and resort outposts are boring.

Resort still expected to open in December.

I am sure the new Beach Club will open a few months after that.

Reservations will open August 1st.

Rack rates are expected to be;

High Season - $1,900/night
Low Season - $1,200/night

Add on tax and I'm sure a resort fee.

I live on the property so I am here but I don't know how to post pictures to Flyertalk.

I could email some tomorrow to someone who could post them......

By the way......the New York Times put on the web today a good article on the resort. Try googling "Ritz ups the Ante in. puerto Rico"

747 was kind enough to email along some photos from the property's opening day.

What a breakfast!

A photo of the first cocktail served?

This looks pretty darn nice and also easy to get to. The prices will be sky high, but it will be the nicest RC in the Caribbean for sure. The rest of their Caribbean properties are mediocre at best. It looks like the rates will be about the same as Amanyara. Let's see how that goes. Thanks for the photos.
