Elite Traveler announces its 101 Top Suites

I picked up the July/August issue of Elite Traveler and they have their annual selection of 101 Top Suites. Lots of nice pictures!

not sure how much interest there will be here, but it does list things like contact information. the OP's link was to a registration-required download, instead of article itself.

Great article! I have to say the 10,230 sq.ft (7,900 indoor, 2,330 outdoor) Presidential Suite at the Banyan Tree Sanya seems incredibly overpriced at USD$19,700, especially in light of the fact that I received a quote for the 36,000 sq.ft. (23,000 indoor, 13,000 outdoor) Presidential Suite at the Mandarin Oriental Sanya at USD$14,350.

The MO Sanya is not opening until the end of the year, at the earliest, however...

Yeah, but they put really great mints on your bed at turndown!

This list is strange, there is a range of sizes from 1000-15,000 sq ft so the listings aren't really comparable at all.

Amanjunkie, thanks for that MO sanya rate. ^

its only 22.3K ft2 interior?

http://www.hubx.com/hotel/646000334.asp (mirror of old MO info)
Approximately 3,328 square metres / 35,822 square feet, plus 1,250 square-metre / 13,455 square-foot private terrace and gardens.
the banyan tree sanya "compounds" ($19700 & $21800) are 6BR with features like 3K ft2+ pool plus
entourage living quarters, with guest capacity of 44 and 36 respectively
(24BR & 28BR total)
http://www.banyantree.com/press_rele...nya_feb08.html
certainly a unique option for a family/corporate group.

You're right, the 35,822 sq. ft. is INDOOR only, and the 13,455 sq. ft outdoor area is in addition to that, making it nearly 50,000 sq. ft! Definitely a great deal for USD$14,350. ^

The only thing I'm unsure about is whether there is an outdoor pool in addition to the indoor lap pool. With the amount of space in the suite and being in Sanya, I would certainly hope so.

We are planning a group trip to Sanya before the end of the year, but since the MO delayed their initial summer opening, we might just have to "slum it" at the Banyan Tree, if only they can give us a better price.

ive seen the pool referred to as indoor and outdoor IIRC. not sure which it is, or if there are 2, etc.

FYI, the RC also has 3BR villas.

Yes, but the three bedroom ocean front villas at the RC Sanya are "only" 3,950 sq.ft. indoor, 6,275 sq.ft. total including outdoor area, much smaller than the other ones mentioned. The rate I received is RMB$58,000 or USD$8,530, so relatively less value for money than the MO suite.

They also have a one-bedroom presidential Ritz-Carlton Suite that is 3,735 sq.ft., but of course, without a pool, at RMB$48,000 or USD$7,060.

Neither of these rooms would fit our group.

Amanjunkie, you have such good taste in hotels that I wonder if you know what Sanya is like. It is a very down-market seaside destination that is currently being hyped by the high-end hotel groups. It is primarily aimed at the domestic market. Are you sure about this?

Yeah, but can you fit 20 nuclear subs in your Sanya suite?

Thanks vuittonsofstyle for the tip! Wow, that doesn't sound good at all. I admit we somewhat bought into the "hype", and as none of us had been to Sanya before and was interested in checking it out as a new destination. Mostly we were just fascinated with the "super suite" at the MO. With the kind of higher rates in Sanya across the board (not just the top suites) for the luxury properties, we didn't think Sanya could be that bad. Perhaps we were wrong?

I assume you've been there, how would you compare Sanya with other regional destinations like Phuket, Koh Samui and Bali, and with Hawaii, which Sanya seemingly models itself after?
