$860 > $6800 low season seems pretty high comparatively speaking

now this is a press release

The opening of The Peninsula Shanghai heralds the return of parent company The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited to its roots, as it owned and operated four of Shanghai’s most celebrated hotels - The Kalee, Majestic, Palace and Astor House Hotels - in the first half of the last century. With a distinguished heritage as Asia’s oldest hotel company, The Peninsula Hotels is proud that its newest hotel returns to Shanghai, one of the world’s most exciting cities.

...Exotic woods, imported stones, black lacquer, carved glass and accents of polished chrome...Carpets are 100% wool and hand-tufted. Polished chrome Art Deco details throughout the room, such as the chandeliers and decorative lamp stands, contrast with Chinese accents, including hand-painted panels on the black lacquer TV cabinet...

A typical guest room is sub-divided into discreet elements of bedroom, bathroom and dressing room. A “privacy door” allows the bedroom to be closed off from the rest of the room, creating the sense of privacy of a suite in a typical room.

...large electronic safe...Internet radio, weather display panel, and a “nail dryer. “

...separate bath and rain shower, accented by carved opaque glass panels and an intricate floral carving above the bathtub, hand-carved in limestone to a French design. A spa button beside the bathtub dims the lights, activates the “Do Not Disturb” function on the phone and doorbell and switches on soothing music...

Is it me, or is Laucala more about marketing than anything else? It looks extremely ordinary - a sort of Six Senses rustic look with very non-Aman blue pools (imagine what Aman would have done!).

Just because they are charging a lot and 'screening' guests does not make Laucala desirable or good. I am also concerned about their over-reliance on hydroponic food production, which is a horrid way to grow vegetables.

Yup, 40 bedrooms and claims 5 restaurants. Lessee, with 80 customers, that works out to 16 customers/restaurant/meal, assuming no one skips dinner or orders room service. The golf course is only 9 holes and added to the prices are 17.5% taxes. It does all ring a bit faux, basically selling exclusivity.

http://www.elitetraveler.com/news_de...ing-rate-value

The Peninsula Shanghai will open on October 19, 2009.

Peninsula Preview Rate. Valid October 19, 2009 through February 28, 2010, this rate starts at 2,009 Yuan for a Superior Room (about $295). Normal rates are 3,200 Yuan or about $468 a night. Guests also receive ... round-trip airport transfers from Hongqiao or Pudong International Airport.
seems to vary whether preview / corp / value experience rates are cheapest, kind of odd. discounted rates available for first 3 suite categories. after that looks like rack only. so depending on suite life, might be good place to use summer splendour free nights.

Judging from the website room photos, there's a lot of similarities with the Pen Tokyo + improved enhancements here and there. It also helps that it does looks ultra-posh. I'm quite convinced the Peninsula Group is bound to make sure this hotel will be a great success. In fact, I've already booked it for November.

Us too. Mr. Megatop and I will make our first visit to Shanghai in December. We've been thinking about it for three years or so, but as longtime and loyal Pen devotees, we've been waiting for the Peninsula Shanghai to open. This will be our sixth Peninsula.

We'd better get the other three before Paris opens.
