World's 50 Best Hotels: Discussion, Criticism, Kvetching

The World's 50 Best Hotels list was released yesterday, and if it's anything like the Restaurants and Bars lists, it should generate quite the, er, spirited discussion.

I have no doubts that this group has some thoughts.

There are undoubtedly more absurd lists and some of the hotels also belong in the top 50. However, as is often the case, it seems that marketing-intensive hotels are given special consideration. In any case, it doesn't add any value for me.

None of my true favorites made the list and for that, Im thankful. And judging by rates and occupancy at those places, it wont hurt them being left off either.

Some placements are laughable but it's a nice list to read information about each property. Beware of the PR spin though.

I would even say that less than half of the 50 actually belong on this list.

The worlds best hotel is an - admittedly beautiful - hotel that has been open for barely a year, and in that year has given free nights and goodies to every travel agent, travel journalist and influencer they could find. It seems thats all it takes to win such a title.

Lots of chains and big brands. Most true gems are missing entirely. This was not decided by people who have true luxury hotel knowledge, simple as that.

I generally quite like these kinds of lists and know the "top 50" people well from their bar and restaurant guides. This one though is really poor, embarassingly so. There's clearly far too much of a focus on brands, novelty and Instagrammable scenes. A number of their top 5 aren't top 5 in their respective cities/ regions.

I noticed that too. It is also praised that Passalacqua has become number 1 out of nowhere, but Capella Bangkok is the newcomer of the year. The latter in particular has not exactly gone down like a bomb.

Another forum called it a pay to play list.

4 Seasons Bangkok and Hotel de Crillon deserve to be in the top 50.

I’ve only been to one on that list (La Mamounia). Some names I recognize, but there are quite a few that are new to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

As a general rule, I like lists but not always because they’re on point, heh. Most of us in this forum are aware of the PR aspects involved in list generation …

With 4S Bangkok I doubt many agree here.
Of course you have to say - and I like to repeat myself - that there is no such thing as the "best" hotel (or restaurant). Every attempt must fail. Hotels and tastes are too different for that.

I think that one can have a reasonable debate as to whether the FS Bangkok is really one of the world's top 50 best hotels. I think it's impossible to justify it being in the top 5 though.
